Rutgers University School of Law-Newark, Rutgers University School of Law-Camden, Seton Hall University School of Law, and the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC), will host the first ever New Jersey Law School Day on Saturday, February 27, 2010 in Newark, New Jersey.  This program is part of DiscoverLaw.org month.

DiscoverLaw is an LSAC initiative to encourage racially and ethnically diverse students to discover career opportunities in law.  The DiscoverLaw.org website provides students with resources, tips and tools on how to become a competitive law school applicant.  New Jersey Law School Day is a program designed by the three New Jersey law schools as a way for diverse students to learn from current law students, admissions officers, and faculty, and pre-law advisors how to choose a path as an undergraduate that will help them succeed.

While all undergraduates are invited to attend New Jersey Law Day, this program may be particularly helpful to Freshmen and Sophomore diverse students an early opportunity to begin thinking about law school.

A schedule of the day can be found below.  Morning Sessions will be held at the Rutgers-Newark Campus. (Directions: http://law.newark.rutgers.edu/about-school/visiting-us).  Participants will attend the afternoon sessions at the Seton Hall Law Campus, walking distance from Rutgers-Newark.  Tours of both schools will be part of the program, along with a virtual tour presentation of the Rutgers-Camden campus.

Pre-Law Advisors interested in attending the day should contact Malikah Fulton, Director of Diversity Initiatives for Seton Hall Law at malikah.fulton@shu.edu for more information.

Solangel MaldonadoAt Seton Hall Law, diversity in all its forms is an essential part of who we are. Among other things, we strive for diversity in thought, belief, and perspective; cultural, religious, ethnic, and educational backgrounds; and geographic regions. Not only are the legal, governmental, and business communities that law schools serve increasingly diverse, our mission is to uphold the tradition of social justice, treating all individuals with dignity and compassion, and providing pathways of opportunities for diverse groups of individuals to fulfill their potential.

As part of Seton Hall Law’s efforts to maintain and build upon a diverse academic and legal environment, Dean Patrick Hobbs created the Dean’s Diversity Council, an advisory body comprised of faculty, administrators, alumni, and student leaders. The Council’s mission is to promote a diverse and an inclusive academic and legal community, offer guidance to student organizations seeking to enrich the experiences of a diverse student body, and support the law school’s efforts to recruit students from diverse backgrounds. Assisting us in these efforts is Malikah Fulton, Administrative Officer for Diversity Initiatives.

An integral component in our efforts to promote diversity is our pipeline programs that reach out to urban students as early as eighth grade and high school and college students. Through such programs, faculty, administrators and students at Seton Hall Law not only play a role in fulfilling our mission of social justice, but also help to shape and profoundly impact the lives of others. We encourage you to explore our programs and initiatives, offer your suggestions, and discover how you, too, can play a role in these important efforts.
