Seton Hall Law School Honors New Jersey State Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa, Graduates 326 at Prudential Center

Governor Chris Christie Applauds Decision of Alma Mater to Honor General Chiesa’s ‘exemplary service to our state’

Newark, NJ - Seton Hall University School of Law granted an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree to New Jersey State Attorney General, Jeffrey S. Chiesa, the Commencement Speaker at the Law School’s 59th class graduation. The convocation was held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and 306 law students received Juris Doctor degrees, 5 received LL.M. degrees, and 15 received M.S.J. (Master of Science in Jurisprudence) degrees.

Attorney General Chiesa was honored for his long and exemplary service to the people of the State of New Jersey, and cited as a role model for new attorneys.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who graduated from Seton Hall Law School in 1987, remarked:

“Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa has long been a close, trusted advisor and dear friend for more than two decades. As long as I’ve known him, he has put his duty and responsibility to serve the people of New Jersey first, and done it with considerable talent and integrity. Jeff has led our state’s law enforcement efforts in an effective, no-nonsense way that’s already having a significant impact on New Jerseyans. Under his leadership, the department has organized and implemented several gun buy-backs, cracked down on human trafficking, enhanced diversity within the State Police, and fought hard against child exploitation through aggressive prosecution and legislative initiatives.

I am very pleased that my alma mater – Seton Hall Law – is recognizing Jeff for his exemplary service to our state. Today’s graduates would do well to emulate him. Class of ’13, from the class of ’87, ‘Hazard Zet Forward.’”

Dean Patrick E. Hobbs of Seton Hall University School of Law agreed, ““We are delighted to have General Chiesa as our Commencement Speaker. In both private practice and public service he has been an exemplary attorney and a model for all our graduates.”

In his capacity as State Attorney General, Mr. Chiesa oversees a dozen legal divisions, more than 650 attorneys, and the entire New Jersey State Police Department. Prior to becoming New Jersey’s Attorney General, Mr. Chiesa served as Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, as well as an Assistant United States Attorney. In the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of New Jersey, Mr. Chiesa served as Chief of the Public Protection Unit, Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, and, ultimately, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. He began his legal career in 1990 with the law firm of Dughi, Hewit & Palatucci in Cranford, New Jersey and, after serving in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, practiced as a partner with the firm of Wolff & Samson. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Accounting and earned his law degree from The Catholic University of America.

"I am deeply honored to speak to the graduates of the class of 2013," said Attorney General Chiesa. "I am also very humbled to receive this honorary degree from an institution that has turned out so many excellent attorneys of great skill and reputation."
