I. Overview

One of the most important benefits of an externship program is the opportunity for students to immerse themselves into a particular office and into a particular aspect of the legal system. The educational goals for the externship program are:

  1. to train students in lawyering skills by enabling them to work alongside practicing attorneys;

  2. to give students greater understanding and insight into the workings of the legal system and profession;

  3. to increase student awareness of the professional responsibility and ethical obligations of attorneys; and

  4. to have students reflect on and learn from their work experience.

II. Seton Hall Law Externship Programs

Seton Hall Law's Externship Program provides exciting and varied opportunities in the government sector, with not-for-profit organizations, with judges at the federal and state levels, the European Court of Justice, and with specific entertainment companies.  Sections IIA. and IIB. include information on all currently available externships.  Please note that the externships listed in section A. have requirements that slightly differ from externships listed in section B. 

A.) The following externships are supervised by individual faculty members. These externships may have requirements differing from those in section III below.  Please see individual course descriptions contained in links below, and which are also always available in the Externship Handbook in the Resources Section of the Symplicity System.

III. Externship Requirements

Students will be awarded 2 credits, Pass/D/Fail, provided the following requirements are fulfilled:

  1. Externships are available to students who have completed their first year of law school, provided the student has completed a minimum of 22 credits of study.

  2. Effective Summer 2012, there is no longer a minimum cumulative GPA requirement for students enrolling for externships during the summer. However, there is a 2.33 minimum cumulative GPA requirement for students enrolling for most externships during the Fall or Spring semesters, which has been lowered from 2.60. In some instances, a higher cumulative GPA may be required for certain externships. Please refer to the Externship Guide on the Symplicity System for more information.

  3. Students must attend 2 mandatory Externship Orientations.

  4. A minimum of 150 hours of work performed on-site at your placement. You must keep your own time records using weekly timesheets to be signed by your supervising attorney. If you are not provided one at your externship, use this timesheet.

  5. A minimum of 20 pages of written work from the field placement. Written work must reflect substantial legal analysis and be comparable to the nature of legal work produced by a first-year associate (rather than, e.g., work that a paralegal or college intern could produce just as readily and competently). This should be substantially your own work; work product that is in large part copied from others’ work product would presumptively not qualify (e.g., boilerplate interrogatories involving little in the way of tailoring to a particular case). The work product may consist of a portfolio of numerous shorter writings or one longer document. Ordinarily, substantially less than half of the work product should be in the form of case summaries or similar work product that, while legal, merely summarizes others' work, rather than involving an appreciable degree of original legal thought or application of law to new circumstances.  Appropriate work product can be in a wide variety of forms (briefs; memoranda to supervisors; letters to clients, adversaries, or a court containing legal reasoning; pleadings; transactional documents; individualized discovery requests or responses; etc.) so long as they meet the above criteria.  Note that this written work requirement is in addition to the required reflection papers.  All written work product must be redacted prior to submitting it at the end of the semester.

  6. Reflection on the externship experience will occur through a required total of 10 pages of written reflection, completed by the end of the semester. You should keep a journal or use the comments section on your weekly timesheets to record your progress. This will prove extremely useful when writing your reflection paper.  The written reflection is not intended to be merely descriptive. The reflection should encompass your thoughts about what you experienced or learned while serving as an extern; it should include your personal reactions to serving as an extern, rather than a report about your duties.  Click here for some suggested topics to cover in your paper. Note that this paper will be taken into account in assigning your grade. It is separate from your evaluation of the experience.  

  7. Timely submission and satisfactory completion of the Student Evaluation Form.

  8. You must give your supervising attorney the written Placement Supervisor Evaluation Form at the end of the externship. Your supervising attorney must send the form directly to the Externship Administrator.


IV. Grades

All students are graded by the Faculty Supervisor on a Pass/D/Fail basis for the 2 credit externship course. Grades will be based on 1) satisfactory completion of the externship requirements; 2) written work produced during the externship; 3) written Placement Supervisor Evaluation Form completed by the supervising attorney; 4) two 5 page written reflection papers; and 5) written student evaluation.


V. Registration/Other Considerations

  1. There is a limit of 8 credits of field placement (externship and judicial externship combined) which may be counted towards graduation.  No student may take more than two credits of field placement in one semester.  Students may not receive more than 2 academic credits for any one particular externship (with the exception of the European Court of Justice Externship, Health Law and Entertainment Externships).

  2. There is a 15 credit limit on non-classroom courses.

  3. Students cannot participate in an externship in the same semester in which they are enrolled in a clinic.

  4. Students may not seek credit retroactively for externships completed without prior registration and without the prior approval by the Externship Administrator of the externship placement.

  5. Prior approval by the Externship Administrator is required for all externships. After receiving prior approval by the Externship Administrator, students must complete the Externship Registration Form and submit it to the Externship Administrator for registration (Important: Judicial Externships require a different form which is to be submitted to Dorothea Harris in Student Services). Approvals and registration for externships must be completed by the end of the Drop/Add registration period for the semester for which the externship is sought.

  6. Students may not receive credit for participation in a field placement for which the student receives compensation.

* Please be advised that students must maintain the required GPA for the particular externship throughout the semester during which the externship takes place (the minimum GPA for most externships is a  2.33 for fall and spring semesters, however, some externships require higher GPAs - please refer to the course description  for each externship on Symplicity). Thus, if a student satisfies the GPA requirement at the time he or she submits the Externship Registration Form but fails to maintain eligibility based on grades that are posted after submission of the application, he or she will be ineligible to receive credit for the externship. In light of this policy, students who are close to the GPA cut-off at the time of application should not rely on credit eligibility. Most importantly, students close to the GPA cut-off should not plan to use externship credits to establish residency or to complete the 88 credits necessary for graduation. They should, instead, enroll in a two-credit class to avoid unnecessary risk. Policies relating to the GPA requirements for externships are not subject to waiver by the Associate Dean for Curriculum, the Dean of Students, or Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs & Policy.
