NYC Public Service Core Federal Work-study Program

New York City Public Service Corps:

The Public Service Corps is dedicated to providing graduate and undergraduate students with opportunities to serve their communities, build professional skills and learn about careers in the public sector. A PSC internship links meaningful community service experience with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. For application availability, contact the Government Counselor

Overview:

The Public Service Corps, which is sponsored by the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services, provides an excellent internship program for both law students, graduates and undergraduates to work as interns each summer and academic year at approximately 25 NYC agency locations. In fact, 1,000 graduate and undergraduate interns have worked under this unique PSC program. The PSC dedicates itself to furnishing students with valuable work experiences as well as improving the students’ internship experience through professional development workshops. Additionally, PSC offers an Academic Credit Internship Program (Externship), which operates year-round.

Position:

How interns are placed? PSC staff meets with each applicant to talk about his/her internship preferences, reviews available placement options, and then arranges an interview with the appropriate agency. Upon approval by the agency and the applicant, an internship “contract” is signed. At the placement site, each agency designates a coordinator as a point of contact between the PSC and agency staff. Direct supervision is provided by a designated site supervisor and general oversight is maintained by the PSC staff.

Students are considered employees of the NYC Public Service Corps. As employees, students will be required to fill out time sheets and other employment forms. Public Service Corps Work-Study Internship applications and applicable tax forms can be obtained from the Office of Career Services.
