Information for New Online Graduate Certificate Students

This webpage contains all of the information you will need to get started with your first reading assignments, and how to access your Blackboard and Seton Hall email accounts. Please bookmark it for future reference. Any changes or additional information prior to the start of classes will be posted here, as well as on Blackboard, so check back often!!

CLASS MATERIALS:
Students must purchase the following textbook for the course:
Furrow, B.R., Greaney, T.L., Johnson, S.H., Jost, T.S. & Schwartz, R.L. (2008). Health law, cases, materials and problems, abridged (American Casebook Series) (6th ed.). Eagan, MN: Thompson West. ISBN 0-3141-9602-1.
The textbook is available through the Seton Hall Law Bookstore website at www.shu-law.bkstr.com.
FIRST ASSIGNMENTS:
Below are some of the first week's assignments to get you started. Please note that some of the materials cannot be accessed until your Blackboard account has been activated, which will be on the start date of the Program. Once you have access to your Blackboard account, please check the syllabus for additional assignments.
1. The following required readings for Module 1, Week 1 of this course must be completed by the third day of class:
- Textbook pp. 75 – 90 (Informed Consent)
- Textbook pp. 122 – 133 (Physician Malpractice and the Standard of Care)
- Textbook pp. 168 – 174 (Hospital Negligence)
- Textbook pp. 178 – 182 (Hospital Negligence)
- Textbook pp. 252 – 264 (Patient Safety Regulation)
2. You must also view the PowerPoint Presentation for Week 1 by Monday. It can be accessed through Blackboard (see instructions for accessing your Blackboard account below) by clicking on "Module 1" then "Week 1" and then scrolling down to PowerPoint Presentation for Week 1.
3. Finally, a set of introductory questions for Module 1 will be listed in the Discussion Board in Blackboard. These questions are based upon the assigned readings listed above and are designed to ensure that you have an accurate understanding of the key points in the readings. Your goal should be to accurately state the relevant points of law as concisely as possible.
Each student will be assigned a question set; while you are encouraged to think about how you would answer all of the introductory questions for the Module, you will only be required to submit answers for your assigned question set.
Individual assignments for question sets will be distributed by the beginning of the course. Students will be responsible for posting the answers to the question they have been assigned no later than Monday night of the first week of class.
The Introductory Questions for Module 1 can be accessed through Blackboard by clicking in the left-side panel on "Module 1" then "Week 1" and then scrolling down to Medical Malpractice: Introductory Questions for Week 1 OR by clicking on "Discussion Board" in the left-side panel and scrolling down to the "Module 1 - Medical Malpractice: Introductory Questions for Week 1" link.
ACCESSING BLACKBOARD, EMAIL AND PIRATENET:
Aside from the textbook, all course materials, syllabus, assignments and other information will be accessed through Blackboard. Individual Blackboard, PirateNet and Email accounts will be activated on Friday, October 8. Please download the following instructions for navigating your Blackboard account as well as accessing PirateNet (LawNet) and your Seton Hall email account.
