The Center for Social Justice (CSJ) and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) released a report, Discharge, Deportation, and Dangerous Journeys: A Study on the Practice of Medical Repatriation, documenting an alarming number of cases in which U.S. hospitals have forcibly repatriated vulnerable undocumented patients, who are ineligible for public insurance as a result of their immigration status, in an effort to cut costs.

Haiti Rule of Law Program (Spring 2013)

Spring 2013 - Early March*

(*Dates to be Determined)

Program Description  |  Application Requirements  |  Costs

The deadline for applications to Seton Hall Law’s Spring 2013 Human Rights trip to Haiti is Friday, November 30, 2012.

Law students are invited to apply for Seton Hall’s Spring 2013 Human Rights Trip to Haiti. The trip will take place during spring break from March 3-7th (exact dates to be determined). The deadline for applications is November 30, 2012. More details about the project, application requirements and costs are below.

Program Description/Background

Seton Hall initiated its Haiti Rule of Law Project in 2002. Since that time, faculty and students at Seton Hall Law have worked to support L’Ecole Sun>perieure Catholique de Droit de Jérémie (E.S.pan>C.D.R.O.J.), a small Catholic Law School that operates in the evenings and is located in the remote city of Jérémie, Haiti. E.S.C.D.R.O.J.’s mission is to promote rule of law, justice, and peace in Haiti by training a new generation of lawyers who are committed to social justice. This year, Seton Hall Law School is partnering with McCarter & English to lead a joint human rights delegation to Haiti over spring break.

In order expose SHL students to issues involving access to justice, we will meet with lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and religious leaders who are committed to developing rule of law in Haiti (many of whom are E.S.C.D.R.O.J. alumni).  In the evenings, the delegation will spend time at E.S.C.D.R.O.J. meeting with the law students, graduates and faculty.  During past trips, delegates have also conducted "know your rights" trainings with a local youth association and interviewed judges, prosecutors, and prison administrators to gather information on prison conditions for a submission to the United Nations Human Rights Committee.  Students may have an opportunity to engage in similar work and to visit a Haitian human rights organization that is partnering with the Center for Social Justice in a case involving a massacre at a soccer match in Port-au-Prince during this trip.

Application Requirements

Applications must be submitted via email by November 30, 2012, to Professor Lori Nessel (lori.nessel@shu.edu), and CSJ Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor Rachel Lopez (rachel.lopez@shu.edu). If you need more time to complete the application due to Hurricane Sandy, please send an email to Rachel Lopez or Lori Nessel in advance of November 30, 2012.
