Haiti Rule of Law Program (Spring 2012)

Spring 2012 - Early March*

(*Dates to be Determined)

Program Description  |  Application Requirements  |  Costs

The deadline for applications to Seton Hall Law’s Spring 2012 Human Rights Trip to Haiti has been extended. The new deadline is Friday, January 20, 2012.

Law students are invited to apply for Seton Hall’s Spring 2012 Human Rights Trip to Haiti. The trip will take place during spring break from March 4-11th (exact dates to be determined). The deadline for applications is January 20, 2012. More details about the project, application requirements and costs are below.

Program Description/Background

Seton Hall initiated its Haiti Rule of Law Project in 2002. Since that time, faculty and students at Seton Hall Law have worked to support L’Ecole Superieure Catholique de Droit de Jérémie (E.S.C.D.R.O.J.), a small Catholic Law School that operates in the evenings and is located in the remote city of Jérémie, Haiti. E.S.C.D.R.O.J.’s mission is to promote rule of law, justice, and peace in Haiti by training a new generation of lawyers who are committed to social justice. This spring, in order expose SHL students to issues involving access to justice, we will meet with lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and religious leaders who are committed to developing rule of law in Haiti (many of whom are E.S.C.D.R.O.J. alumni). Students may also have an opportunity to visit a local prison, where E.S.C.D.R.O.J. is creating a criminal defense clinic to serve those who cannot afford lawyers. In the evenings, the delegation will spend time at E.S.C.D.R.O.J. meeting with the law students, graduates and faculty. Additionally, SHL students will be paired with graduating E.S.C.D.R.O.J. law students in order to mentor and assist them as they draft their thesis, which is a requirement to become an attorney in Haiti.

Application Requirements

Applications must be submitted via email by January 20, 2012, to Professor Lori Nessel (lori.nessel@shu.edu), and CSJ Clinical Teaching Fellow Rachel Lopez (rachel.lopez@shu.edu). If you need more time to complete the application due to travel over the break, please email us in advance of January 20, 2012.

  1. Resume
  2. Transcript
  3. Statement of interest
  1. Why you would like to take part, what background you have that makes you specially suited to or interested in the excursion, and what you would hope to gain from the experience. In particular, please describe your level of involvement in the Haiti Rule of Law Project, any other experiences you have with Haiti or international human rights.
  2. Your thoughts about a particular contribution you would make during the trip, including any academic, professional or personal interest or experience you might share with the law students in Jeremie.
  3. Your level of proficiency in French or Creole, if any. Note: Preference will be given to French or Creole speakers.
  1. Participants will be expected to commit time prior to going on the trip to prepare for it, as well as to develop their background about Haiti’s history and international human rights law. Participants will also be expected to commit a minimum 15-20 hours in order to assist an E.S.C.D.R.O.J. law student with research and input on their thesis. Please indicate your willingness to make this time commitment.

Costs

Participants are expected to cover the costs of their airfare to Haiti, which is approximately $550-650 USD. Seton Hall will cover other trip-related expenses, including lodging, flights from Port Au Prince to Jeremie, and food. Because we may spend time in the prison in Jeremie this year, students with weakened immune systems or health concerns may wish to consult with their physicians prior to applying.
