Program Description
Seton Hall's Law in Belgium and Ireland Summer Program affords students the opportunity to participate in a special session on European Union Law and learn about emerging issues in intellectual property law and health and pharmaceutical law.
Galway, Ireland
Galway is a showcase for intellectual property and business transactions arising from Ireland’s new trade policies. Ireland has embraced globalization and is rapidly adapting its legal systems and institutions to the demands of a global economy. As a European Union member state, Ireland faces the complexities of inter-governmental relations, foreign trade, and international investments that impact the world system of economics.
The National University of Ireland ("NUI") at Galway is known for its study of transnational issues. It is a quintessential contemporary university campus. Students will enjoy classes in state-of-the-art buildings, and have access to the library, recreational facilities, and a choice of excellent restaurants including the An Bhialann that dates back to 1845. The NUI at Galway community is comprised of quaint shops, pubs, cafes, literary events, poetry slams, sport matches, and other activities that enable students to become entwined in the traditional culture and busy lifestyle of Galway.
Galway is home to the world-renowned Druid Theatre Company, Macnas Street Theatre Company, and An Taibhdhearc. Only a few miles away are the Aran Islands where students can ride in horse-drawn carriages and ride bicycles to local or historic sites, such as the Spanish Arc, the Cliffs of Moher, and castles of Gaelic aristocracy. Students can learn the history of The Claddagh, the Galway Hooker, and why Galway itself came to be known as the City of the Tribes.
Galway is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland after Dublin and Cork. Students comprise at least 15% of the population. NUI at Galway is one of the constituent universities of the NUI, together with NUI Dublin, NUI Cork, and NUI Maynooth. For further information, you may visit the National University of Ireland’s website.
Leuven, Belgium
The Louvain Institute for Ireland in Europe ("Institute") is based on the historic Irish College in Leuven. Through its close proximity to Brussels, the heart of the EU, the Institute has a unique network of expertise in EU Institutions and Policies. A major role of the Institute is to provide awareness of EU policies, programs and development to other EU members, applicant states, the US, Asia and South America, as well as promoting the culture and arts of Ireland. For more information about the Institute, visit its website.
The EU has rapidly grown to 27 member states. Students will visit the main EU institutions in Brussels, such as the European Parliament, to study first hand the new forms of EU governance and its affiliate organizations. Students will also travel to Luxembourg to visit the European Court of Justice.
Leuven is capital of the province Flemish Brabant. As home to the oldest Catholic university in Belgium, Leuven is filled with students during the academic year. It is a vibrant city comprised of many architectural wonders, museums, Abbeys, city parks, art exhibitions, marketplaces, shops, galleries, restaurants, pubs and cafes. Students will have an opportunity to visit these wonderful locales, interact with other students, and immerse themselves in the Belgian culture. Leuven is also home to the Stella Artois brewery, on of the Belgium's most famous breweries.
Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and home to the European Court of Justice. Students will have the opportunity to visit the ECJ and sit-in on a Court proceeding, and learn more of the inner workings of the Court. In addition to a variety of museums, restaurants and pubs in the Place d'Arms, students may be able to visit the Fortress and its underground tunnels, which were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.
Field Trips and Excursions
During the program, students will participate in field trips to EU institutions and visit the courts of Ireland. Students will also have some weekends free to explore on their own, and may visit http://www.ireland.com for further information on places of interest.
