Here you get the best of what suburban New Jersey has to offer without having to venture too far from the law school itself. You can find great local shopping, easy transportation, surprisingly active nightlife, and a suburban way of life.
Westfield is a town with historic flavor, and they’re in the process of restoring facades and streetscapes to reflect that element of the downtown. Much of Westfield is made up of stately single-family homes on tree-lined streets, so if you’d like to relax when you leave the law school, this might be the place for you.
But you’ll be surprised to find a fairly large and busy downtown for a place of its size. Most of the shops, stores, and restaurants reflect Westfield’s upscale image, so you can easily find a good wine tasting or fine dining from acclaimed chefs.
Many of the rental options here are single-family homes because this is the main type of residence in town, but you can also find apartment buildings in Westfield and the surrounding area.
Train service from Westfield to Newark is on New Jersey Transit’s Raritan Valley Line and takes about 20 minutes. If you prefer to drive, you’ll need to get familiar with Route 22, Interstate-78, the Garden State Parkway, and Route 21.
Westfield actually has its own symphony orchestra that plays concerts regularly, a community theater company that’s existed since 1934, and an otherwise active arts community that includes the Sweet Sounds Downtown summer long jazz festival.
If you’re looking to stay active, the recreation department has a number of ways to keep you moving including fitness at the Westfield Y, softball, and lacrosse.
A unique aspect of life in Westfield is that many stores you traditionally find in malls are located right in town. Obviously convenient shopping is major plus to living there. The town also has its own movie theater, the Rialto, in the center of town, so you don’t have to go far to catch the latest flick either.
Westfield also has a large, modern public library with a vast array of online databases for students and a complete range of activities for the inquiring mind. Online access to library resources is also available.
