On-Campus Interview Program
Dress Code
As with all other parts of the On-Campus process, there are certain expected standards.
To perform well on an interview but lose the job because of an error in dress or demeanor is all too common
and as frustrating to prospective employers as well as to prospective employees. You do not wish to be
remembered during the Hiring Committee's meeting as the man with the loud tie or the woman with the spike
heels and slit skirt. Words such as "classic", "moderate", or "conservative" come to mind.
Men: A navy blue, charcoal gray or black suit is appropriate. Shirts
should be white or light blue with buttoned down or standard collars. A maroon
or navy tie with a small indistinguishable or repetitive pattern is appropriate.
“Rep” ties, foulards or paisley ties are best. Socks should match the suit
color.
Women: Navy, black, brown, taupe, burgundy, gray or hunter green
suits are best. Hose should be navy, taupe, suntan, beige or white. Shoes should have a medium, walkable
heel and be of either black, brown or blue. Pantsuits are appropriate, if you are more comfortable in pants
than in skirts, but skirt suits are more typical. Skirts should be of a reasonable length, i.e., not above the knee, and “slit-free”. Shoes
should be well-polished. Handbags should be small and unobtrusive.
Students should not bring a briefcase on
an interview. A small portfolio or manila folder is appropriate. When in doubt, bring in the clothing item
in question or discuss it with one of the career services counselors.
Hair should be well-groomed. Length is not the issue for women as it once was, but if you do wear your hair
long and full, make sure that it is well under control with no elaborate hair ornaments. Men and women should
have their hair recently trimmed. Men's facial hair should also be neat and well groomed. Women should wear
make-up or nail polish sparingly with dull colored lipstick, blush and eyeshadow. Skip the perfume or cologne
on interview days. Interview rooms are small, and not all that well ventilated, and many people have
sensitivities to various scents. Do not chew gum. Do not have materials visible in a jacket pocket.
Jewelry should be minimal. No bangles or charm bracelets. Some individuals believe that it is important to
wear a watch because it shows punctuality and attentiveness to time management.
A firm handshake is a must with each person you meet beginning with the Recruitment Coordinator or the first
On-Campus Interviewer you encounter. Women must also shake hands with both men and other women.
Ideally an interviewer should not be able to recall anything unique about your dress or demeanor. A mock
interview program will be offered prior to the start of OCI.
