MARTINDALE HUBBELL FROM THE CAREER CENTER TAB
- Path: Click on Career Center Tab>
Click on Search Martindale-Hubbell from the
left hand side menu
- Martindale-Hubbell is the most widely
used and trusted resource for the global
legal profession, delivering the
introductions and insights you need to
prepare to succeed in the business and
practice of law. You can identify and
retrieve valuable professional and
biographical information to target employers
for interviews or to prepare for the
interviews you have already secured.
- Click on the Lawyer Tab. It can
be helpful to contact attorneys from your
school who practice in a specific geographic
area. This is essential for networking and
for having successful interviews.
- Type Seton Hall under the
Law School field
- Type Seton Hall under the
Undergrad field
- Type New Jersey under the
City field
- Click the Search button
- Click the link for Paul N Ambrose.
Note the available information,
including peer review rating, practice
areas, year admitted to practice and
associations. Peer Review Ratings
attest to a lawyer's legal ability and
professional ethics and reflect the
confidential opinions of members of the
Bar and Judiciary. Buyers of legal
services, as well as those making
referrals, consider Peer Review Ratings
invaluable when evaluating a lawyer.
Peer Review Ratings let you know you
have found counsel with superior ethics
and significant professional experience.
- Click the Location/ Area of Practice
tab. Note: It is best to select either a
For Lawyers Only search or a For Law Firms
Only search when using this tab. Searching
for lawyers and law firms simultaneously can
be confusing because the results will
include the names of both firms and
individual attorneys mixed into one list.
- From the “Look For” drop down
menu choose For Lawyers Only:
- Select Corporate Law from the
Major Practice Area field
- Type Loyola under the Law School
field
- Type Chicago under the City
field
- Click the Search button
- Choose the link for Scott R.
Anderson and note the available
information
- From the “Look For” drop down menu
choose For Law Firms Only:
- Select Intellectual Property &
Trademark & Copyright from the Major
Practice Area field
- Type San Francisco under the
City field
- Type California under the State
field
- Type Berkeley in the Additional
Terms field
- *Click the Search button
*Typing the name of the law school
in the additional terms field
ensures at least one attorney at
that firm will be from the desired
law school.
- Click the Government tab
- Using the Career Tab to look up
government attorneys is the fastest
way to see a list of government
agencies and departments listed on
Martindale Hubbell. You can now
search through the listings to find
alumni of your law school or
undergraduate institution.
- Select Commerce, Dept. of

THE CAREER CENTER TAB
- PATH: Career Center Tab> Click Search
Employers in the News from the left hand
menu
- A news search is a great way to learn
about recent cases a firm or lawyer is
handling and activities in which a lawyer or
firm is involved. This is wonderful
information for the interview. LexisNexis
has one of the largest collections of
non-legal information online. Fact-finding
is more complete with the exclusive news and
business materials on LexisNexis.
- Search: Latham Watkins. Keep the source
News, Previous 90 days. Click Search.
Click on the first article.
- It is advisable to stay current on the
news involving any potential employer. Click
on the Save as Alert link at the top center
of your screen and fill out the template
with your desired search criteria. Relevant
materials are effortlessly delivered to your
email, a LexisNexis printer, or stored
online for quick retrieval.
- Name the Alert: Latham & Watkins. Check
the box next to Notification and type in
your email address. Click Save. Click Save
Again. Click on the Alerts tab and delete
the Alert. Note how easy it is to set up and
delete Alerts.
RESEARCH THE CASES OF POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS
FROM THE LEGAL TAB
- Path> Research System tab>Search
tab>Legal>Choose Federal & States Cases,
Combined
- One of the most effective ways to
demonstrate your knowledge of and interest
in a particular organization is through case
law. Understanding a few of the law firm’s
cases is a great way to generate discussion
in an interview.
- Search:
- Choose the Counsel segment in the
Restrict by Document Segment drop-down
menu. Segment searching ensures that
your search terms are found in a
particular portion (segment) of your
document. The Counsel segment searches
for cases that contain your search terms
in the Counsel segment of a case. Note:
The Martindale-Hubbell forms located on
the Career Center page we used earlier
are actually segment searches in
Martindale Hubbell. Delete any previous
terms from the search terms box.
- Type: White & Case (name of firm) in
the box to the right of the segment drop
down box.
- Click Add
- Restrict By Date to the Previous
Year
- Click Search
- Use Focus to search for specific areas
of law or issues. Focus narrows your
results to the most relevant ones by adding
additional terms. Focus is a search within a
search.
- Focus: and Bankruptcy. This will return
a list of cases in which White & Case was
counsel and the term Bankruptcy was
discussed.
- If you know the attorney with whom you
will be interviewing, you should also run a
search for cases litigated by that attorney.
- Click the Edit Search and delete
previous search terms [COUNSEL (White &
Case)]
- Choose the Counsel segment in the
Restrict by Document Segment drop-down
menu
- Type Morgan pre/3 Chu (name of
attorney) and click the Add Button. When
searching for a person it is important
to use the /3 connector in case the
attorney uses a middle name or initial.
The pre/ connector searches for
documents that contain the first term
preceded by the second term by not more
than the stated number of words.
- Click the Search button
RESEARCH LAW REVIEW ARTICLES PUBLISHED BY
POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS FROM THE LEGAL TAB
- Path: Search tab>Legal tab> Law Reviews
& Journals>US & Canadian Law Reviews,
Combined
- Individuals and organizations are often
published authors or contributors in Law
Reviews and Journals. This is another great
opportunity to create a discussion in an
interview. In addition, these documents can
help you gain a further understanding of the
organization or individual.
- To find an author or an acknowledgement
of a law firm:
- Search: Delete any previous terms
from the search terms box.
- Choose the Author* or the Name**
segment under the Select a Segment
drop-down menu
- Type Amy pre/3 Chua in the box to
right of the Select a Segment box.
- Click the Add button
- Click the Search button
*The Author segment searches for both
Authors and Acknowledgements.
**The Name segment only searches for
Authors

published authors in Martindale-Hubbell
Legal Articles. You should be knowledgeable
about the articles your interviewer has
authored. This is another great opportunity
to create a discussion in an interview.
Martindale-Hubbell Legal Articles is a
database that comprises over 12,000 fully
searchable articles that offer attorney
insights into legal decisions and commentary
on new statutes and regulations.
- Search:
- Choose the Byline segment under the
Select a segment drop down menu
- Type: Holland & Knight in the box to
the right of the Select a Segment box
- Click Add
- Click Search
- Open the first article. Under the Byline
segment you can view firm credentials,
additional articles by the same author(s),
additional articles by the same firm,
stories related to the same topic in news
and business sources and stories related to
the same topic in Mealey's Litigation
Reports.
COUNSEL SELECTOR TAB – NEW tab in
www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool!
- The NEW Counsel Selector tab brings the
power of the martindale.com website within
the lexis.com framework. There is no
difference between the Counsel Selector tab
and the martindale.com website. Counsel
Selector provides you with direct access to
the Martindale-Hubbell legal directory and
with several new tools to aid in your job
search and professional development.
- Lawyer Locator Search Widget
provides access to over 1 million
lawyers and firm profiles from over 160
countries. Note: This search widget is
very similar to the Martindale-Hubbell
search widget available from the Career
Center, however it does not allow for
several restrictions that are available
from the Martindale-Hubbell search
widget.
- Top 10 Lists can be an excellent
starting point for you to identify law
firms of interest based on any of the
variables identified below, particularly
litigation activity in specific practice
areas:

Ratings – find out how other lawyers
rate the performance and ethics of
the individuals with whom you will
be interviewing

- My Martindale Network is an ideal
tool for managing contacts during the

HISTORY
- Click on the History link in the upper
right hand corner of the screen. History
automatically archives all of your research
for the past 30 days. Helpful search
descriptions allow you to track your
research progress and quickly determine
which resources you have exhausted. Use
Recent Results to quickly scan your search
activity from the last 24 hours. Archived
Activity is held for another 29 days. Either
set of search activity can be printed with
the view printable history link to
thoroughly keep track of your activity or
share it with others.

STRATEGIC PROFILES
- CourtLink® searches the most in-depth
historical federal civil online database of
court records, covering 10 to 20 years, then
pinpoints relevant information and delivers
a Strategic Profile with easy-to-read
graphs, data charts and facts. This
information allows you to quickly identify
practice area trends and opportunities with
a firm, attorney or judge. CourtLink®
enables you to discuss an attorney’s or
firm’s practice areas during the interview.
- Path: Search tab>Legal tab> Court
Records from Courtlink> Litigant, Attorney &
Judge Strategic Profiles
- Search:
- Click Attorney/Law Firm tab
- Court System: U.S. District Courts
(Civil Only)
- Law Firm: Greenberg and Traurig
- Search for cases: 1/1/2007-present
date.
- Click Create Profile.
- The Attorneys/Law Firm profile shows
all of the attorneys that match the law
firm name we entered on the previous
search page. We must now decide whether
to include all of these attorneys in our
profile, or select only certain
attorneys to include by clicking on the
boxes next to those names.
- Check the box next to “Case Count”
to select all of the attorneys
- Click Create Profile
- Profile Report:
- The Nature of Suit (“NOS”) gives
the classification of the main legal
issues in the case and is based on
the civil cover sheet. An attorney
must check the appropriate NOS on
the cover sheet.
- The first pie graph is a Nature
of Suit Analysis. This allows you to
see the primary litigation practice
areas. The text list describing the
NOS percentages is the chart on the
left of the screen.
- Scroll down to see the Judge
Appearance Analysis. This allows you
to see where the firm or attorney
has appeared.
- Scroll down to see the Client
Analysis. This allows you to see all
of the clients the firm or attorney
is presently representing in
litigation (in U.S. District Ct.),
the case heading of each case and
the NOS classifications.
- Scroll down to see the Capacity
Served graph. This allows you to see
whether the law firm or attorney
most often represents plaintiffs or
defendants.
- The Judgment Analysis chart,
located at the very bottom of the
screen, shows what percentage of the
time courts have ruled for or
against the attorney or firm.
- Back at the top of the screen,
the gray Trends tab next to the
Profile Report tab, provides Trend
analysis with graphs on: Case Count
by Period, Case Count by Case Type
by Period and Case Count by State by
Period.
- At the top of the screen, the
gray Case List tab provides the
heading for all of the cases. Also,
if you click the View link in the
Action column and then click Run
Search, you can view the docket for
that particular case. It is
interesting to note what type of
motions or documents are filed
during different cases and how a
particular court’s docket moves
forward. NOTE: Do not worry that
there is a note at the top saying
“Cost for this search is $0,00.”
There is no cost associated with
using Courtlink on your academic ID.
Note that not every court docket
will be available to open because
you can only open dockets that
someone in the commercial market has
already retrieved.
- The gray Criteria tab provides
the search criteria used to create
the profile.
