Student Employment
Federal Work Study
Federal Work Study positions are available in
various departments of the Law School. To apply for
these positions, you must first file a
FAFSA. (See
How to Apply for
federal aid.) Federal Work Study is awarded based on
your financial need, and is considered a financial aid
award. In addition to federal work-study positions,
there is departmentally funded student employment for
students who do not qualify based on financial need.
You will be awarded a specific dollar amount, which is
not deducted from your bill; rather, you will be paid
based on the actual hours worked. Full-time, first
year students can work a maximum of 15 hours per week
during the academic year; upper-class students can
work a maximum of 20 hours each week. The rate of pay
ranges from $7.50 to a maximum of $12.00 per hour.
First-year students must maintain at least a 2.00
cumulative GPA, be enrolled full-time (At least 9
credits) and have demonstrated financial need.
Students must complete the necessary paperwork at the
Office of Financial Resource Management. Work cannot
commence until paperwork is approved by the Student
Employment Coordinator.Faculty Research Assistantships
Full-time upper-class students enrolled for at
least 9 credits with at least a 2.00
cumulative GPA wishing to supplement their financial
aid package may do legal research for a faculty
member. Students must be willing to resign any other
commitments, which may conflict with Faculty
Assistantship obligations. The rate of pay is $12.00
per hour. Students may work a maximum of 20 hours per
week during the school year and 33 during the summer
and semester breaks. A resume and letter of
application must be submitted to the Director of
Academic Affairs. Additional
paperwork must be completed in the Office of Financial
Resource Management. Work cannot commence until
paperwork is approved by the Student Employment
Coordinator.
Summer Employment
Enrollment in summer classes are not required for a
student to be eligible to work in the summer, however,
the student must be returning to Seton Hall Law for
the fall semester. Summer Federal Work study earnings
will decrease the amount of eligibility for FWS during
the academic year, and may affect the student’s
overall financial aid package for the upcoming
fall/spring academic year. Students who are
interested in working over the summer should contact
the Office of Financial Resource Management for
additional details.
