How to Disable Tamper Protection in
Symantec Antivirus

After installing Symantec Antivrius 10.0 or 10.2 (Windows XP and Vista), you must disable Tamper Protection to prevent the software from conflicting with Windows Defender.

Simply follow these instructions to determine if Tamper Protection is running, and if so, how to disable it.

1. Open Symantec Antivirus by navigating to
Programs --> Symantec Client Security --> Symantec AntiVirus, or by simply clicking on the gold shield in the tray on the bottom right of your screen.

When the Symantec AntiVirus window appears, navigate to Configure --> Tamper Protection (as shown below):

2. In the Tamper Protection area, make sure that the Enable Tamper Protection box is unchecked.  If it is checked, uncheck it and then select OK.

Tamper Protection is now disabled.
