How to Upgrade to Microsoft Update

In the past, your Windows XP and Windows 2000 could be set to update itself on a schedule.  But, if you had other Microsoft products, such as Word, Excel, etc., you could easily forget that those need updates as well.  Microsoft has released a new service that will look for all Microsoft products on your computer and see if they need updates.

These instructions are only needed for Windows XP.  For Windows Vista, simply click on
"Get updates for more products" in your Windows Update window.
If you see this in your Windows Update window:

You have already upgraded to Microsoft Updates for Windows Vista.

1. To install this, simply go to the Windows Update site and look for the “News” section on the right side of the window. If it says "Upgrade to MS Update" then you can proceed with the following steps. Otherwise, your computer has already been updated and the following steps are unnecessary.

2. Once you chose the “Upgrade to Microsoft Update” link, you will see the following screens.  Click Start Now:

3. Then, Click Continue:

4. If you have pop-ups blocked, look for the install message just under the Address (URL) line.  Click on it once and choose Install:

5. And select Install again:

6. Then, go ahead and Check for Updates to make sure you are up-to-date.
