Policies - General Use and Broadcast Email
Email at Seton Hall Law School is a service provided to the law school community for the purpose of improving and encouraging communication among our users. It is provided in support of the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University, and the administrative functions that support that mission. In an effort to maintain and manage this important resource the Division of Legal Computing in conjunction with University Computing must adopt certain policies and procedures dedicated to preserving this resource for all users. Therefore please be advised of the following:
General Use:
1. Users of electronic mail services are to be limited to law school
students, faculty, staff and alumni, and those authorized by the
Division of Legal Computing.
2. Electronic mail services may not be used for unlawful activities,
commercial purposes or uses that violate other University policies
or guidelines. The latter include, but are not limited to, policies
and guidelines regarding intellectual property, or regarding sexual
or other forms of harassment.
3. University email services shall not be used for purposes that
could reasonably be expected to cause, directly or indirectly,
excessive strain on any computing facilities, or unwarranted or
unsolicited interference with others’ use of email or email
systems. Such uses include, but are not limited to, the use of email
services to:
(i) send or forward email chain
letters;
(ii) send broadcast email or
"spam," (that is to send group email to over 100
recipients or to exploit listservers or similar broadcast systems
for purposes beyond their intended scope to amplify the widespread
distribution of solicited or unsolicited email);
(iii) "letter-bomb" (that
is to resend the same email repeatedly to one or more recipients to
interfere with the recipient's use of email).
4. Users in violate of these rules or regulations may be subject to
sanctions up to and including the suspension or termination of email
and network privileges and services.
Broadcast Email:
Seton Hall Law School defines broadcast email as any message or group of messages intended to be communicated to an audience greater than 100 email recipients, either inside or outside the University email system. However, as broadcast email is a useful tool to communicate to large groups, a procedure has been developed to meet this need. Any user wishing to send a broadcast Email must send their request to the Asst. Dean for Student Services at 973-642-870 for approval and distribution. All messages must meet the following guidelines.
Messages must be:
1. Related to a relevant law school
event or purpose
2. Of an acceptable size and format as determined by the Division of
Legal Computing (as a rule, messages must be under 200k in size and no Word or Wordperfect attachments as
primary messages, please! Simple is better!)
3. Non-commercial in nature
4. Non-partisan in nature
Bypassing this procedure shall be considered a severe email violation and subject to penalty up to and including the suspension or termination of email and network services.
