Student Network Rules and Regulations

All student network and e-mail accounts are subject to numerous rules and regulations. Most rules and regulations are common sense, such as excessive or abusive use of e-mail, excessive printing beyond allowed limits, physical abuse of computers or printers, and the like. The Division of Legal Computing reserves the right to take whatever steps necessary to ensure the proper operation of our networks, up to and including the erasure of personal files and accounts, the suspension of network services on an individual account or network-wide basis, or the downing of network servers for maintenance and expansion. While we strive to have all network services operational at all times, this is usually impossible, especially with a growing software and hardware base. Therefore, as a precaution and part of standard computer use, every user should back up important files on multiple devices in case of network failure.

Use of Lab Printers: The use of printers at the law school is a privilege that can be abused if not carefully regulated. As a strict rule, each student is permitted to print up to 100 pages per day. Anyone found in violation of this policy may have their printing privileges revoked for the remainder of the semester. Also, in the interest of conservation, all users should print out only what they need and will read. Faculty and staff should restrict their printing to what is essential and avoid waste.

Student Lab Rules:  When it comes to the use of student labs, the rules of use and conduct are pretty straight forward. They include but are not limited to the following...

  • Students are permitted to use any PC but only one at a time.
  • All work done on PCs must be school related.
  • Students shall not harm or abuse the equipment in any way (including software!). The Division reserves the right to expel any student found abusing equipment from the lab or any other area of the school where computers are present and revoke all computer privileges. Further, abuse of equipment or theft of services is an Honor Code violation and subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.
  • When at peak use and when students are waiting for computers, the lab staff can institute a 10 Minute Rule. This means no game playing at this time, no browsing the web for non-research purposes at this time and if you leave your computer unattended for more than 10 minutes, the lab monitor will save your work and log you off, allowing the next waiting student to log on.
  • Scanning Computers in the lab are intended for scanning purposes only. If somebody needs to scan a document, they have priority. That means anybody else using these computers can be bumped from using the machine at this time. However, if the lab is full, they have priority on the next available computer.
  • Lexis and Westlaw printouts will be held until the end of the day after they are printed. This means that if a document is printed on Monday, it will be thrown out at the end of Tuesday; Thursday, at the end of Friday; and so on.
  • Any questions not related to printer jams or running out of paper on Lexis or Westlaw should be directed at the Westlaw- Lexis representatives, who will have their schedules posted in the lab. If the representatives are not available, please use the phone provided at the back of the lab to contact the respective organization.
  • Please use good sense when printing out a document in either Lexis or Westlaw. In other words, do NOT print out a statute that is 500 pages or more. Odds are you will never read all of it. Print out the pages that you need. This way you are saving paper and helping your fellow students to do their research.
  • DO NOT REMOVE ANY EQUIPMENT OR SUPPLIES FROM THE LAB
  • DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED IN THE LAB
