NEWARK, N.J. – Shavar D. Jeffries, associate
professor and supervisor of the Civil Litigation
Clinic at Seton Hall University School of Law, has
been selected by the New Jersey Network (NJN)
Foundation to receive its first-ever Brendan T.
Byrne and Mrs. Ruthi Zinn Byrne Distinguished Public
Service Award.
Jeffries has been selected to receive the award
in recognition of his work with the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Newark, where he serves as board president.
Also selected to receive the award is Felix Rouse,
director of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Under the
leadership of Jeffries and Rouse, the Boys & Girls
Clubs were taken from near financial ruin and placed
on a solid foundation so Newark children can
continue to benefit from its programs and services.
As a child, Jeffries participated in the clubs and
credits the organization for helping to prepare him
for a successful career as a lawyer and teacher.
“The Boys & Girls Clubs provided me with a
foundation for success and people who helped to
nurture my development,” says Jeffries. “To be a
part of providing that now for Newark children is
both an honor and source of great personal
satisfaction.”
The awards will be presented at NJN’s 2006 Gala –
“Celebrating the Best of New Jersey’s Neighbors” –
on Wednesday, June 14, at Drew University.
