Newark, NJ – Professor Mark C. Alexander, of Seton
Hall University School of Law, recently was
presented with the Aletha R. Wright Volunteer
Leadership Award from Leadership New Jersey for
outstanding civic and political service.
Alexander currently is serving as New Jersey
Campaign Director and as a policy advisor for
Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Last
year, he served as general counsel for Cory Booker
and the Booker Team in the Newark mayoral campaign,
and continued to serve in that capacity as Mayor
Booker assumed his office. He also previously served
as issues director for Bill Bradley in his 2000
presidential bid, and as issues director for Senator
Edward Kennedy’s reelection in 1998.
He was presented with the Aletha R. Wright Volunteer
Leadership Award at the Leadership New Jersey
“Celebration of Leadership” banquet December 6, 2007
at The Heldrich in New Brunswick.
“I’m pleased to have been honored by Leadership New
Jersey for my work with volunteer organizations,”
said Alexander. “It has been my privilege to be able
to work with organizations that harvest the energy
of so many volunteers in the service of the greater
good.”
Alexander clerked for Chief Judge Thelton Henderson
of the United States District Court for the Northern
District of California and was a litigator with
Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in San Francisco before
joining the Seton Hall Law School faculty in 1996.
He currently is on leave from his position at Seton
Hall Law.
Professor Alexander writes and teaches in the areas
of Constitutional law, law and politics, the First
Amendment, and criminal procedure. His scholarship
focuses on the intersection of law, politics, and
government, and on free speech issues.
Leadership New Jersey seeks out men and women with
successful professional lives and challenges them to
take on wider responsibilities to make New Jersey a
better place in which to live and work by taking
part in a year-long seminar program. Graduates of
the program are encouraged to remain active through
the Leadership New Jersey graduate network, taking
part in projects and activities that reflect the
goals of the program. Alexander is a 2005 graduate
of the program.
The Aletha R. Wright Volunteer Leadership Award
recognizes outstanding leadership as a volunteer in
service to religious organizations, scouting
programs, community sports programs, political
campaigns, and service organizations. The award is
named for the late Aletha R. Wright in honor of her
spirit of voluntary, civic leadership.
