FEDERAL PUBLIC
DEFENDER EXTERNSHIP (EXTN9179)
2 credits.
Prerequisites: Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA; Criminal Law
Co-requisites: Criminal Procedure I or II
Note: Some preference will be given to students in their final
year of law school.
The Federal Public Defender’s office represents individuals
charged in federal court with a criminal offense and cannot
afford retained counsel.

Externs research and write legal memoranda. Externs may have
the opportunity to attend court sessions, and to attend
client/witness interviews.
Submit resume, cover letter, writing sample and transcript to
Stephanie Kauflin in the Office of Career Services, Room 470.
Cover letter should be addressed to the faculty supervisor of
the externship program (currently Professor Jon Romberg).
