Information on Taking Exams through Planet SSI

Planet SSI

In order to download the exam software, you need to log into the Planet SSI website.   Planet SSI is also used to complete a take-home examination.  To perform either task, please follow the below steps:

           FAQ: www.softwaresecure.com/faq.htm
           PC Demo: www.softwaresecure.com/demos/SES.htm

           MAC Demo: www.softwaresecure.com/demo_student_apple.htm

Registration / Software Download

Please complete and submit the registration form by Tuesday, April 29, 2008.
(Even if previously submitted for prior exam periods, you must submit it again).

  1. All students must complete and submit the registration form to the Registrar's Office. No exceptions will be made to the above date.

  2. Download and install the software to your laptop by logging into Planet SSI account. (You can be anywhere that you have an internet connection to download the program).  You need to login with your SHU e-mail address as your user name and your 8-digit SHUID number as your password.  It is highly recommended that you change your password after your initial login.  Before loading the software, you must do all critical and recommended Windows updates.

For a comprehensive overview of PlanetSSI, go to myLAW's Registrar/Bursar Services area and click on "Planet SSI User Guide".

  3. Once installed, conduct a practice exam to insure that the software is working properly.

For PC users using the wireless version of the software, you can conduct this test from anywhere that you have an internet connection.  For a comprehensive look at how Securexam works, go to myLAW's Registrar/Bursar Services area and click on "How Securexam Works".

For MAC users, it just consists of filling out the header page that appears and then using the software to ensure error free use. Use "Test" for your exam number, professor, and course in your header. For a comprehensive look at how Securexam works for MAC users, go to myLAW's Registrar/Bursar Services area and click on "MAC Securexam Handbook"

Additional Information

     For Wireless Users (PC Users)

  • You must have an internal or external 802.11b or g wireless card, and that card needs to be certified on our wireless network by Tuesday, April 29, 2008.

  • Be sure to bring your power cord and external wireless card, if needed, to each exam.

  • The software is now designed to run a Transfer Utility program upon exit which enables you to upload your completed exam to Software Secure's server and returns you to your desktop. At the "Transfer Utility" screen, wait a few moments until your Network Status says "Connected" at the upper right corner of the screen. Then simply click on the "Start Transfer" button located at the bottom right.  If your completed answers have been successfully uploaded, you will see a green message that says "Success" in the center of the screen.  If your laptop cannot upload your exam to their server, click on the "Exit Transfer Utility" button located underneath the "Start Transfer" button.  The Transfer Utility then terminates and in a real exam situation, the proctor will retrieve your exam off of your desktop with a USB key so it can be printed.

     For Mac Users

  • Be sure to bring your power cord to each exam.

  • The software is now designed to save to a user specified location on your laptop.  You must select to save the exam file to your desktop. It then saves your completed exam on your desktop and exits the software.  In a real exam situation, the proctor will then retrieve your exam to a USB key so it can be printed.

Information on Take-Home Exams

  • LOG IN – Enter your SHU e-mail address as your user ID and your eight digit SHUID number as your password.  It is highly recommended that you change your password after your initial login.  If at any time you forget your password and can’t log in, click on “Forgot MY Password” located under the “Log In” button.  The system will automatically generate and e-mail you a new password to your SHU e-mail address.

  • DOWNLOAD EXAMINATION QUESTIONS – Click on “Exam Center” button.  Under “Classes and Exams”, click on the “+” to the left of your professor’s name.  This gives information on exam availability (if no information appears, the exam questions have not been made available.)  This is also where you download the examination questions (click on "Download" button and save the exam questions to a drive).  However, once you initially download the exam questions, your time to complete the exam has begun.

  • UPLOAD COMPLETED ANSWERS – Select the exam and click on the “Upload” button.  Using your “Browse” button, locate the file you wish to upload (be sure that it is the correct file that you wish to upload and you have included a cover page with the following information: Exam Number, Professor and Course.)

Once you have uploaded your completed answers, you will immediately receive an e-mail confirmation at your SHU e-mail address.  Please keep this for your records.  After uploading, please check “Reports.”(see below), if no upload date appears, try uploading again.  If you experience any further difficulty, e-mail your completed answers to law_registrar@shu.edu.

  • REPORTS – Click on this button to review your download and upload history for each exam.  Under “Additional Search Criteria select “Non-Securexam.”

Please Note:

CERTIFICATION – You must include the certification on the examination questions with your completed answers.  If you upload your completed answers without the certification, you may e-mail the certification to law_registrar@shu.edu.  Please list the course name in the “Subject” field of your e-mail.  Failure to include the certification will delay your grade from being posted.
