The Summer Institute for Pre-Legal Studies

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding academic experience? Are you thinking about the study of law, but are unsure whether it is right for you? Do you want to improve your academic performance at your undergraduate school? Or, are you just looking for some excitement in your life? THE SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR PRE-LEGAL STUDIES ("PRE-LEGAL") could be just what you are looking for.

The primary purpose of Pre-Legal is to increase the number of disadvantaged students who apply and who gain admission to an accredited law school. Its objectives are:

  • to stimulate and encourage the study of all facets of law among disadvantaged students;
  • to counsel students on successful preparation for law school admission;
  • to provide an academically challenging program designed to replicate the first-year law school experience; and
  • to provide students with an opportunity to work with minority practitioners and judges both in and outside of the classroom.

Now entering its twenty-eighth year, Pre-Legal has been a tremendous success. Of the program participants who decide to apply to law school, over 80 percent are accepted into an accredited institution. Many of the Pre-Legal graduates have gone on to graduate from law school, pass the Bar, and practice law throughout the country. Pre-Legal is funded through the Educational Opportunity Fund of the Commission on Higher Education of New Jersey, has been hosted by Seton Hall University School of Law, with participation from Rutgers University School of Law. This unique arrangement provides students with an opportunity to interact with faculty from both institutions.
