The Center for Social Justice Scholars Externship and Pro Bono Opportunities

The International Human Rights/Rule of Law Project and Urban Revitalization Project are seeking externs and pro bono students for the 2008 Fall semester. Externs must complete 150 hours over the course of the semester and receive 2 academic credits, and pro bono students must complete 35 hours over the course of the semester and will receive a notation of public service on their transcripts. International Human Rights/Rule of Law Project

The International Human Rights/Rule of Law Project placement takes a multi-disciplinary approach to protecting the rights of immigrants in New Jersey, with a special focus on immigrant women, through a lens of international human rights. Project externs and pro bono students will be involved in litigation on behalf of individuals and in cases with possibilities for legal reform in both domestic and international fora. Project externs and pro bono students will also be involved with drafting reports with policy recommendations on specific issues. Finally, the Project will undertake community outreach and education initiatives with the goal of building stronger ties to, creating a better understanding of, and serving the legal needs of regional immigrant communities.

* Preference will be given to students with coursework and/or experience in the area of immigrants’ rights and/or international human rights.

Urban Revitalization Project


The Urban Revitalization Project litigates cases and engages in community outreach and education in the areas of urban housing and public education in New Jersey. Working in cooperation with the Civil Litigation Clinic, Project externs will represent clients in such areas as predatory lending, foreclosure, housing discrimination, and challenges to slumlords rental policies; the education-related matters may include student discipline, access to public education, and representation of parents seeking adequate individualized education plans for their children, after school tutoring, or other educational services. The Project students, working in conjunction with cooperating nonprofit organizations, will also assist in the Urban Revitalization Projects advice clinics on related education and housing issues, and participate in community education and outreach sessions.
