J.D. Program Health Law Concentration

Seton Hall University School of Law offers a Concentration in Health Law to J.D. students. The student pursuing a health concentration may focus on traditional health law, drug law or biotechnology law. Students increasingly integrate the health concentration with intellectual property courses.

J.D. Health Law Concentration Requirements
Before registering for each semester's courses, participants in the Health Law Concentration are encouraged to consult with the concentration director, Professor Carl H. Coleman, on course selection. Faculty advice is available to students considering the concentration, as well as to those already formally admitted to it.   Students who successfully complete the concentration requirements will be permitted to so designate on their resumes. Concentration students will also receive a certificate after graduation.

To obtain the Health Law Concentration, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Successful completion of at least 13 credits in the following courses:
    a) Health Law (3 credits).
    b)
Health Care Access and Payment (2 credits) or Health Care Fraud and Abuse (2 credits)
    c) Food and Drug Law (2 credits) or Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Marketing and Compliance (2 credits)
    d) One health law seminar, in which the student must complete a paper that satisfies the Advanced Writing Requirement (AWR).
    (3 credits)
    e) Administrative Law (3 credits)

  2. Maintenance of a 3.0 GPA in the courses counted toward the concentration.

A student interested in pursuing the Health Law Concentration must "declare" his or her concentration by no later than the end of the first week of classes in the student's penultimate semester.

Externship Program
Seton Hall Law School's externship program offers J.D. health law students an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a health care setting. The externships also provide students with unparalleled opportunities to meet health care attorneys and providers who become a bridge to their career in health law.

Students pursuing the Health Law concentration are encouraged to consider doing an internship. However the externship is not a requirement for obtaining the concentration.

For more information about the health law externship, please contact Stephanie Kauflin at kauflist@shu.edu.

The recipient of this award receives a substantial tuition scholarship upon admission to the Law School.  Students are selected to receive this scholarship on the basis of academic performance, LSAT score, and a commitment to a career in health law.  The scholarship is renewed each year, as long as the recipient maintains the required GPA.

Kalison, McBride, Jackson & Murphy, P.A. Health Law Award

Julie is the recipient of the newly instituted Timothy G. Rothwell Health and Pharmaceutical Law Scholarship.  This scholarship will be awarded yearly to an outstanding  incoming student with an interest in health law.  Julie first developed an interest in health law while caring for her seriously ill mother and attempting to navigate her way through the healthcare system.
"I'm honored to receive the Timothy G. Rothwell Health and Pharmaceutical Law Scholarship and find it particularly significant that Mr. Rothwell was granted the 23rd Annual Human Services Award by CancerCare, a national nonprofit organization that provides free professional support services to anyone affected by cancer.  CancerCare and their volunteers made a huge difference in my mother's quality of life.  I am grateful to have received a scholarship named after someone who is active in a cause that is dear to me."

"It didn't take long for me to realize that professors at Seton Hall place a strong emphasis on the students' success and future.  This is evidence both inside and outside the classroom.  Not only are the professors easily accessible, but they also reach out to students, showing that they really do care.  As a health law student, I have seen first hand the the opportunities in the field are unlimited, and further enhanced by the reputation of the
faculty and the commitment they make to their students."

Isai Thirumavalavan, J.D.
Class of 2005

"The strength and national reputation of the health law program is what brought me to Seton Hall, and I have not been disappointed.  I find myself challenged and enriched by the experience every day.  The classes I have taken, in addition to the seminars and symposia that are offered, have exposed me to industry trends and current case law.  This has not only given me a solid base from which to launch my legal career, but has increased by effectiveness and proficiency in my current position in managed care."
