The purpose of the Dean Acheson Legal Stage Program is to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and the European Union in the context of the legal profession.  It is therefore open to American citizens and legal permanent residents only.  Priority will be given to applicants who have completed three years of law school and who have a strong knowledge of European Union Law.  As noted above, some knowledge of French is required, varying with the type of stage.  Knowledge of an EU language other than French and English is an advantage, and generally necessary for a stage with an Advocate General.

As noted in the "Dean Acheson Stage Categories" section, some knowledge of French is required, varying with the type of stage.  Knowledge of an EU language other than French and English is an advantage, and generally necessary for a stage with an Advocate General.

As an externship for academic credit, the program is only available to third-year students who have a minimum GPA of 3.30, have completed the course in European Union Law and possess proficiency in French.

European Union Business Law

This seminar will concentrate on the basic legal rules of the common market and the constitutional structure of the European Union. The developing jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union will be analyzed with a particular focus on the free movement of persons, both the rights of workers and establishments, to be free of discriminatory tax obstacles. The seminar will also explore special topics such as Brexit, company law, EU taxation of the digital economy, EU external relations, intellectual property law, and the Treaty articles on state aid. U.S. constitutional principles are compared throughout the course. There is an optional fall break one credit travel component that may be taken by the students in this course. This course fulfills the requirement of EU law and an EU paper that is necessary for application to the Externship at the Court of Justice of the European Union (Dean Acheson Stage Program).

This seminar meets one day a week in the fall for two hours.

Students who are planning on applying to this program should complete the European Union Law course by their second or third-year of law school.

Note that European Union Law is a prerequisite to participation in the Dean Acheson Externship at the Court of Justice and the General Court (specializing in antitrust/competition law) in Luxembourg. The Dean Acheson Legal Stage Program, sponsored by the Court of Justice of the European Union and the American Embassy in Luxembourg, promotes the understanding of European Union Law among American lawyers. The Legal Stage Program is an extraordinary opportunity for third year law students and recent graduates to engage in substantive research and work with a Judge or Advocate General of the Court of Justice or a Judge of the General Court.

Selection Process

Students are nominated by the Dean on April 1st of each year for either the fall or spring semester. Only three nominees per participating school are allowed.
