Junk Email Filtering in Outlook Web Access (OWA)

Due to issues with Microsoft Live SPAM Filters, many emails from SHU.EDU accounts (i.e., Faculty and Administration) are being sent directly to student Junk E-Mail folders.  If you have forwarded your SHU email to another account, the messages that have been sent to Junk E-Mail WILL NOT be forwarded, so unless you check your actual SHU account, those emails may never be read.

Until the problem is resolved, the Division of Legal Computing recommends either disabling Junk Email filtering completely, or adding the SHU.EDU domain to your Safe-Senders list.  Both of these changes must be done through your SHU account, which can be accessed through PirateNet.

How to Disable your OWA Junk E-Mail Filter

NOTE: Disabling your Junk E-Mail Filter will allow all mail to reach your Inbox, including SPAM, except for any account listed in your Blocked Senders List.  If your mail is forwarded to another account, the junk mail filter there should pick up any SPAM that is forwarded, but that depends on the account and/or your local settings.  There is the possibility SPAM will reach your Inbox, so please be careful opening any suspicious email.

  1. Log into PirateNet and open your SHU Email account (the Mail icon will be in the top right-hand side of the page).
  2. Once in your SHU Email Account, click on Options (located on the top right-hand corner).
  3. On the menu on the right, select Block or Allow.
  4. Under Junk Email Settings, select the option Don't move mail to my Junk E-Mail Folder.
  5. Click on Save (located on the bottom right of the page).
  6. After the save window closes, you can go back to your SHU Email account by clicking on My Mail (located in the top right corner).

Remember that although this turns off the automatic Junk E-mail Filter, OWA continues to evaluate messages by using the domain names and e-mail addresses in your Blocked Senders List, and also continues to move messages from blocked senders to the Junk E-mail folder.

How to Add the SHU.EDU Domain to your Safe-Senders List

  1. Log into PirateNet and open your SHU Email account (the Mail icon will be in the top right-hand side of the page).
  2. Once in your SHU Email Account, click on Options (located on the top right-hand corner).
  3. On the menu on the right, select Block or Allow.
  4. Under Junk Email Settings, make sure that the option to Automatically filter junk e-mail is selected.
  5. Under Safe Senders and Recipients, there is a box that contains the text Enter a sender or domain here.
  6. In that box, enter shu.edu and click on the Green Plus Sign to the right.
  7. You will now see shu.edu in the list below the box (Depending on the number of safe recipients you have you may need to scroll down to see shu.edu).
  8. Check your Blocked Senders list to ensure SHU.EDU is not listed there, and also that the only addresses listed in Blocked Senders (if any) are messages you want sent directly to Junk Mail.
  9. Click on Save (located on the bottom right of the page).
  10. After the save window closes, you can go back to your SHU Email account by clicking on My Mail (located in the top right corner).
