Controlling Spam in Lotus Notes -  Email Filtering with Ironport
(last updated 5/23/08)

As anyone with an email account can attest, volumes of spam are constantly flowing into our inboxes clogging them with all forms of unwanted messages.  These not only waste our time by having to read and delete them, but also take up valuable system resources and slow email delivery.

To remedy this University IT has implemented a University-wide spam filtering service called Ironport. This product  reduces the amount of SPAM reaching your inbox and subsequently reduces the amount of viruses you receive through email. (However it may not eliminate all of it.)

Any emails addressed to you that are considered SPAM by the filter are quarantined and you will receive a daily email message around midnight that provides a link to your quarantined messages. You can either delete the messages, release the messages to your email inbox, or do nothing and they will automatically be deleted in 7 days. The daily email message has the subject of Spam Quarantine Digest and will come from Ironportnotify. To delete or release a message click on the check box to the right of the message and then click either delete or release. To delete or release all messages, use the check box located at the top of all the check boxes, under the Delete button.

Some emails from list serves (mailing lists), while valid, may be considered SPAM by our contracted SPAM filtering service and end up in your quarantined messages. If you experience this, please contact the Technology Help Desk either by telephone, 973-275-2222 or through email at helpdesk and report that you have a list serve that is being considered SPAM and provide the list serve address (who the email comes from) and it will be reviewed for inclusion in the "do not filter list."
