A View From The Court

THE HONORABLE ALAN D. LOURIE
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
Prior to becoming a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for
the Federal Circuit, Alan D. Lourie worked in industry for
more than 30 years. His career path led him from
Monsanto Company and Wyeth Laboratories where he worked
chiefly as a chemist to SmithKline Beecham Corporation where
he began as a patent agent, and eventually became vice
president of corporate patents and associate general
counsel. Judge Lourie was nominated to be a circuit
judge in 1990 by President George Bush. In 1998, he
received the NJIPLA's Jefferson Medal for outstanding
contributions to intellectual property law. Judge
Lourie received his A.B. from Harvard University, his M.S.
from the University of Wisconsin, a Ph.D. from the
University of Pennsylvania, and his J.D. from Temple
University.
