Political and Party Leadership 1948-1988 (38.55 linear feet)

The Political and Party Leadership series documents Rodino’s political activities during his tenure in office. There are nineteen sub-series documented, created by the Congressional office to record Mr. Rodino’s activities.

Carter Transition and Campaign 1954-1978

The Carter Transition and Campaign files document Jimmy Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign and his subsequent transition into the White House in 1977. These files also document Mr. Rodino’s rise as a contender to become Carter’s Vice-Presidential running-mate. Mr. Rodino withdrew his name from the final list of seven candidates because of glaucoma, and instead gave the nominating speech for Carter at the Democratic National Convention.

Carter Transition and Campaign files are arranged in three alphabetical runs from 1954-1978, with the bulk of material from 1976-1978. The first run of files contains correspondence and newsclippings regarding Carter’s running mates and opposition. The second, filed by the letter writer’s last name, contains correspondence to Mr. Rodino regarding recommendations for appointments to both Federal and State government positions. The third contains newsclippings from three-ring binders which document the selection of Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale as the Democratic Party Presidential Candidates and events leading up to the November 1976 Presidential election. For more information, including Mr. Rodino’s role in the Democratic National Convention, see Campaigns, 1976 in the Personal series.
