Carter Transition and Campaign 1954-1978
The Carter Transition and Campaign files document Jimmy Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign and his subsequent transition into the White House in 1977. These files also document Mr. Rodino’s rise as a contender to become Carter’s Vice-Presidential running-mate. Mr. Rodino withdrew his name from the final list of seven candidates because of glaucoma, and instead gave the nominating speech for Carter at the Democratic National Convention. |
Carter Transition and Campaign files are arranged in three alphabetical runs from 1954-1978, with the bulk of material from 1976-1978. The first run of files contains correspondence and newsclippings regarding Carter’s running mates and opposition. The second, filed by the letter writer’s last name, contains correspondence to Mr. Rodino regarding recommendations for appointments to both Federal and State government positions. The third contains newsclippings from three-ring binders which document the selection of Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale as the Democratic Party Presidential Candidates and events leading up to the November 1976 Presidential election. For more information, including Mr. Rodino’s role in the Democratic National Convention, see Campaigns, 1976 in the Personal series. |

Ethnic Lists 1956-1988
Ethnic List files are arranged alphabetically by ethnicity from 1956-1988. These files include ethnic targeted mailing lists, correspondence and research information regarding bills sent through the House of Representatives, newsclippings, and an assortment of supplementary information for organizations and topics important to specific ethnic groups in Mr. Rodino’s tenth congressional district. Italian files make up almost half of this material reflecting Mr. Rodino’s interest in his Italian heritage. The Italian Ethnic List files include information on a range of subjects such as Columbus Day celebrations over the course of Mr. Rodino’s career and the Constantino Brumidi bust dedication at the United States Capitol in 1968. Also included is an exhaustive collection of Italian correspondence files documenting all Italian-oriented issues brought forth in the House of Representatives and in the world as a whole. In addition to ethnic groups, files for Veterans and Women are also included in Ethnic Lists. There are no Ethnic Lists files prior to 1956. |

Rodino served as Chairman of ICEM in 1971 and 1972. Files include correspondence to and from Rodino, ICEM reports, statements made by Rodino and others at ICEM sessions, and travel information. A single ICEM file exists in the collection from after 1973 when Rodino stepped down from ICEM as chairman. Excluding this file, there are no other ICEM files from after 1973. Little People to Little People files are arranged chronologically from 1961-1963. Developed from an initiative by ten-year-old Peter W. Rodino, Jr. III in which he wrote Nikita Kruschev to halt nuclear testing, the goal of Little People to Little People was to promote friendship and understanding between children nationally and internationally through letter writing. |
Redistricting files are arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by folder title. These files document the redistricting and reapportionment of Mr. Rodino’s tenth congressional district through census data and studies, correspondence, oversized maps, redistricting reports, redistricting plans, and redistricting trial information. Includes content regarding the proposed creation of an additional congressional district in New Jersey, which would pave the way for a black congressman in Newark. See Charles Scalera files in the Staff Files series and Campaign files in the Personal series for more information on redistricting. |
