Several Seton Hall Law School graduates, along with Dean Patrick Hobbs, were quoted in this article on the “Terrorism and Civil Liberties” course taught by Samuel Alito in 2003 and 2004. “He was as interested in the material as we were and as interested in working through it as us,” said Robert Marasco, now an attorney in Newark.

Paula Franzese was noted as having been tapped by Acting Governor Richard Codey to serve on the board of trustees of the University of Medicine and Dentistry. In the interview, Erickson commented that part of the judge’s strategy is to bring about a mass settlement. “It’s counterintuitive,” he said, “but the way judges get parties to settle is by forcing the parties to go to trial because it’s both the pressure of an impending trial and the information gathered through a series of trial verdicts that enable the parties to settle mass litigation.”

Edward Hartnett and Mark Alexander were quoted in this article on Judge Samuel Alito’s judicial career and record. Speaking about Alito’s dissent in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Hartnett said, “A big piece of what is going on here is what sort of judicial perspective you apply to a statute. Do you look at it on its face or how it is applied to a particular person? If you focus on the broad sweep of potential people to whom the statute could apply, you can’t see much burden at all.” Commenting on Judge Alito’s traits, Alexander said, “He has always used his considerable legal talents to craft his opinions and craft them thoroughly.”

In this article, Seton Hall Law students talk about their experiences as participants in the school’s Haiti Rule of Law Project, which provides support and assistance to a small evening law school located in Jeremie, Haiti. The school was founded by Archbishop Willy Romulus and Fr. Jomanas Eustache, who believe Haiti can only emerge from its poverty and endless cycle of violence by establishing greater respect for the rule of law.
