This legal research and writing class introduces students to the American legal system and the basic components of legal analysis. Students explore the structure of the American legal system at both the federal and state level, and learn to compare and contrast varied sources of law, including statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions. Part of the class is devoted to performing basic computerized legal research utilizing free Internet resources to locate primary and secondary sources of law, and they applying basic citation rules and format to source materials that students use in their written products. This legal writing class serves as the foundation for all subsequent courses taken as part of the MLS degree and prepares students for the legal analysis and writing necessary for successful completion of those courses.
