Seton Hall Intraschool Negotiation Competition
RULES
|
TIME |
|
Teams will have 50 minutes to reach a settlement. At the
50 minute mark, teams will exit the room to allow judges
to tally their scores for categories except
Evaluation VI, the self analysis. Each team may take one
break of no more than 10 minutes. The 50-minute period
will continue during any such break. If the team calling
the break specifically requests it, both teams must leave
the room during the break.
Student participants are responsible for
timekeeping and for adherence to allotted time periods for
negotiating sessions and breaks.
However, if resources and volunteers are available, timekeepers
or timekeeping devices may be provided. At no time may an individual
identified with a participant act as timekeeper in a
negotiation involving such participant. Decisions by the judges
as to elapsed time are final and
non-reviewable.
Responsibility for timekeeping during the self-analysis periods
rests jointly with the participants and the judges, each having
the responsibility to terminate the period at the end of 10
minutes.

SELF-ANALYSIS |
|
Following
the l0-minute preparation for self-analysis, each team
will have 10 minutes in which to analyze for the judges
the team's performance in the negotiation. This will
take place outside the presence of the opposing team.
The team with the letter designation (last name) closest
to the beginning of the alphabet will go first in the
self-analysis.
Students
will begin the 10-minute period by answering, in the
presence of the judges, the following questions:
(1) "In
reflecting on the entire negotiation, if you faced a
similar situation tomorrow, what would you do the same
and what would you do differently?"
(2) "How well did
your strategy work in relation to the outcome?"
The team should also be prepared to respond to questions
from the judges concerning the team's performance. In
addition, the team might use this as an opportunity to
explain why it chose a particular approach or even a
specific tactic. The judges may take into consideration anything said during
the session for scoring purposes.

|
SCORING |
|
Each judge shall fill out one score sheet for each team.
The ADR Organization will collect the sheets at the
end of each round. The ADR Organization will also
average the scores for each team’s final score.

WHAT MAY BE BROUGHT |
|
Participants may bring and/or use blank flip charts or
black/white boards. These materials may be used only
while both parties are present during the 50-minute
negotiation session; they may not be used during the
self-analysis. No prepared materials may be presented or
handed out during the negotiation session or
self-analysis, except as specifically authorized by a
team’s confidential information. However, the students
may themselves use previously prepared notes in any
format or medium, including a laptop computer, during
the negotiation session. Students may also use
calculators.
