When: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.

What: IRS Associate Chief Counsel Julia Cannarozzi will discuss the application procedures and the requirements for successful completion of the externship.  Also Professor Magnone will talk about the Tax Practice and Procedure course for Fall 2008 that must be taken prior to or concurrently with the IRS Externship.   

(NOTE: This meeting is mandatory for students interested in this externship during Fall 2008 or Spring 2009.  Unfortunately, there are no openings for the Externship for Spring 2008.)

Panelists include:

Charles Buxbaum, Esq., IRS Office of Chief Counsel.  Mr. Buxbaum received his B.A. in Economics from Stanford, his J.D. from Emory University, and his LL.M. in Tax from NYU.  Mr. Buxbaum has clerked for the Hon. Thomas B. Wells, then Chief Judge of the U.S. Tax Court.  In 2004, he joined the IRS Office of Chief Counsel- Large and Mid-size Business division in Newark, New Jersey.  Mr. Buxbaum is originally from Whittier, California, a suburb of Los Angeles.

Tara Lotito, Esq., Coughlin Duffy.  Tara Lotito is an Associate of Coughlin Duffy LLP in Morristown and her practice concentrates in the areas of taxation, estate and trust planning and administration. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Lotito was employed as a Tax Accountant with Rothstein, Kass & Company. Ms.Lotito is a 2004 magna cum laude graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law and received her LL.M. in Taxation at New York University School of Law. A member of the Order of the Coif, Ms. Lotito is admitted in New Jersey, New York, Florida, and the District of New Jersey.
 

John O'Hara, Esq., McCarter & English.  B.S. 2002, SUNY Geneseo; J.D. 2005, Seton Hall University School of Law.  While at Seton Hall, Mr. O'Hara served as President of both the Tax Law Society and IALSA.  From 2003-2005, he participated in Seton Hall's VITA program.  During the summer of 2004, Mr. O'Hara interned for the Hon. Vito L. Bianco, J.T.C. and the Hon. Roger M. Kahn, J.T.C.  During the 2005-2006 court term, he served as a law clerk for the Hon. Peter D. Pizzuto, J.T.C.  Mr. O'Hara is currently an Associate of the law firm of McCarter & English. 

Lisa Rodriguez, Esq., IRS Office of Chief Counsel.  B.A. 2001, Fordham University; J.D. 2004, Seton Hall University School of Law.  While at Seton Hall, Ms. Rodriguez was a member of TLS, a VITA participant for 2 years and one of four Student Directors in her her third year.  She also worked as a tutor for Professor Kaye in Federal Income Tax.  During the 2004-2005 court term, Ms. Rodriguez served as a law clerk for the Hon. Scott J. Moynihan, Presiding Judge, Criminal Division in Union County.  She began NYU's LL.M. program part-time while working at Rogut McCarthy Troy L.L.C. in 2005-2006.  Since April 2006, Ms. Rodriguez has worked as an Attorney for the IRS, Office of Chief Counsel, in Newark.   

Nate Stein, Esq., Stern & Kilcullen.  B.A. 1999, Rutgers College; J.D. 2002, Seton Hall University School of Law; LL.M. 2003, Georgetown Law.  During his last year at Seton Hall, Mr. Stein was an extern for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel.  From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Stein worked as an Attorney with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, Large and Mid-Size Business Division.  In that capacity, he provided legal advice to IRS examiners auditing publicly traded companies, as well as sophisticated tax shelter transactions.  Presently, Mr. Stein is an Attorney with the law firm of Stern & Kilcullen, wherein he represents taxpayers in disputes with the IRS.  Mr. Stein also provides estate planning services to his clients. 

Prof. Ann Thomas, Esq., Managing Director, NYLS Graduate Tax Program.  A.B. 1973, Harvard-Radcliffe, magna cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa J.D. 1976, Yale Law School; Bunting Affiliate Fellow, Bunting Institute, Radcliffe College, 1992-93. 
    
Professor Thomas brings to the classroom 17 years of practice experience-10 as a partner-working in the tax department at Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson, where she specialized in mergers and acquisitions. After leaving private practice, Professor Thomas was an Affiliate Fellow at the Bunting Institute in 1992-1993 and taught as an adjunct professor at Yale Law School in 1993 and 1994. She joined the New York Law School faculty in 1995.  

She teaches a wide range of courses for both JD students and LL.M in Taxation candidates - including Individual Income Tax, Corporate Tax, Comparative Tax Law, Business Law Issues in Structuring the Closely Held Enterprise and the Graduate Tax Research and Writing Seminar.  Professor Thomas has directed the Graduate Tax Program at New York Law School since its inception in 2003.    
    
At New York Law School, Professor Thomas is an affiliated faculty member with the Center on Business Law and Policy, the Real Estate Law Center and the Center for Professional Values and Practice.  She regularly serves as the supervising faculty member for students in tax externship placements and particularly enjoys working with both JD and LL.M students in Independent Study.
    
Her scholarship focuses on comparative taxation, entity taxation, the tax treatment of women and families and the history of the federal income tax.  Professor Thomas is currently working on a book on the emergence of the modern federal income tax during the Progressive Era.  This work also features three New York Law School alumni who were prominent in the development of U.S. tax law in the Progressive Era.
    
Professor Thomas is a past member of the Tax Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (1984-87) and the Executive Committee of the Tax Section of the New York State Bar Association (1996-98).   She has served on the boards of directors of several charitable organizations in New York City where she lives and where she and her husband raised their family.
