Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (V.I.T.A.)
The V.I.T.A. project, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and
the New Jersey Division of Taxation, offers free tax help to
taxpayers with special needs, including persons with
disabilities and the elderly. V.I.T.A. also targets taxpayers who do
not speak English. Volunteer students master basic and advanced
tax issues in preparation for the coming tax season.
Specifically, volunteers learn to calculate exemptions,
deductions, credits and capital gains, and, after demonstrating
proficiency, volunteers help prepare basic tax returns,
including Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and Schedules A, B, D, EIC,
1,2, and 3.
Eligibility: 2nd year law students who have taken Tax I, or any student who has an accounting background.
Schedule: Services are usually provided on Fridays and
Saturdays. Volunteer are asked to donate 5-6 days during tax
season in the spring semester.
