United States Senate Confirms Seton Hall Law Alumnus Paul B. Matey to the Third Circuit

The United States Senate confirmed President Donald J. Trump’s nomination of Seton Hall Law alumnus, Paul B. Matey ’01 to the United States Court of Appeals of the Third Circuit. Mr. Matey is currently Partner in White Collar Criminal Defense Litigation at Lowenstein Sandler.

Prior to Lowenstein Sandler, Matey was part of the Executive Leadership team at University Hospital in Newark serving as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. Previously, he was Deputy Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Christopher J. Christie ’87, served as Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey, and was an associate with Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel. Sitting on the Third Circuit will be a homecoming of sorts for Matey, who clerked with the Honorable Robert E. Cowen on that court after clerking on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey for Judge John C. Lifland. He received his B.A. from the University of Scranton before earning his J.D. at Seton Hall Law.

“Paul’s confirmation to Third Circuit is one of the highest honors an attorney can receive,” says Dean Kathleen M. Boozang, who noted that he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and graduated summa cum laude. “I remember well that even as a student Paul sought excellence and intellectual engagement. The faculty and deans knew him as a partner in the academic enterprise. He since has had a career comprising a great breadth of legal experiences that prepare him well for the federal judiciary.”

Matey’s confirmation continues the high-level Presidential appointments of recent Seton Hall Law alumni: Craig Carpenito ’00 was named as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey and Jay Town ’98 was named as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama.
