Seton Hall Law Assembles Esteemed Group of Judges and Attorneys for McLaughlin Trial Advocacy Workshop

Inaugural Program Endowed by Gift from O’Toole Scrivo, LLC

Newark, NJ – January 2, 2020 – Seton Hall University School of Law welcomes distinguished federal judges and prominent trial lawyers who have agreed to volunteer for the January launch of the Denis F. McLaughlin Advanced Trial Advocacy Workshop. Four federal judges – all Seton Hall Law alumni – will serve as judges for the program’s culminating experience: a trial in the federal courthouse, while a fifth federal judge and six leaders in the legal community will serve as evening speakers during the two-week immersion Workshop.

The innovative program, endowed by a gift from O’Toole Scrivo, LLC, honors the life’s work of Professor McLaughlin, who has impacted thousands of Seton Hall Law students. Professor McLaughlin is the founding director of the Workshop that bears his name. The Workshop involves a competitive admissions process for the Law School’s most advanced trial advocacy students. Each student team is assigned highly skilled attorney coaches who will examine each part of a trial to prepare the student teams for trials before the judges in the federal courthouse. Each day will conclude with a capstone speaker who will engage with the students about their real-life experiences as a trial lawyer.

“Seton Hall Law’s reputation has been built on its superb preparation and training of intelligent and skilled lawyers. This unique program funded by two of Seton Hall Law’s finest lawyers ensures that our legacy of training practice-ready lawyers continues. This is an incomparable opportunity for our students,” explains Dean Kathleen M. Boozang. “Seton Hall Law could not be more grateful for the generosity of time and wisdom by the coaches, judges, and speakers participating in this Workshop. We are blessed to belong to a profession serious about investing in the next generation.”

The federal judges who will preside over the trials are:

- Honorable Katharine Hayden ’75, United States District Judge, District of New Jersey

- Honorable Madeline Cox Arleo ’89, United States District Judge, District of New Jersey

- Honorable Michael Shipp ’94, United States District Judge, District of New Jersey

- Honorable Michael Hammer ’93, United States Magistrate Judge, District of New Jersey

The distinguished panel of evening speakers are:

- Craig Carpenito ’00, United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey

-Michael Farbiarz, General Counsel, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

- Betsy Fishbone, VP, Senior Associate General Counsel, Colgate-Palmolive Company

- Tanya Holcomb, VP, and General Counsel, Global Litigation, Honeywell International

- Honorable Brian R. Martinotti ’86, United States District Judge, District of New Jersey

- Bruce Nagel, Partner, Nagel Rice LLP

- Anthony Slimowicz, Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer, Crum & Forster

“We are grateful that the judges and speakers have agreed to volunteer their time to enhance the student experience of the program,” says Thomas Scrivo ’89. “We are thrilled that these pillars of the legal community will impart their wisdom on future Seton Hall Lawyers.”

“There is tremendous value in the students hearing from and meeting with the speakers each evening,” says Kevin O’Toole ’89. “The speakers will convey their personal knowledge and expectations of how best to serve clients. And that, ultimately, is what it is all about.”
