James B. Johnston is a three-time graduate of Seton Hall University (’82; M.A. ’89 and J.D. ’96) and an unapologetic fanatic of the SHU Men’s basketball team. He is an attorney for the Office of Corporation Counsel for the City of Jersey City. There, he handles labor and employment law matters. He is also Secretary for the Union Township Planning Board.

In addition to the practice of law, James has been an Adjunct Professor at Seton Hall Law School for nearly 20 years. He has taught trial advocacy and deposition skills. His law review articles have been published in law journals across the country including the University of Notre Dame, University of Texas and the University of Southern California. One article, “An Examination of New Jersey’s Money Laundering Statutes” 30 Seton Hall Legis. J. 1 (2005) was cited as an authority by the New Jersey Supreme Court in its State v. DiOrio decision.


Prior to entering the practice of law James served in the police profession for 25 years. He retired as a Lieutenant of Detectives at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office in Newark. There, he spearheaded hundreds of investigations involving government corruption, internal affairs, and financial crimes.

James has served on a number of law school boards at Seton Hall University including the Seton Hall Law School Alumni Council (Past President), Seton Hall Law School Board of Visitors and the Seton Hall Law School Red Mass Committee (Past Co Chair).  He is a member of numerous Irish American civic groups and is a parishioner at Holy Spirit Church in Union where he serves as a Lector.
