Seton Hall Law Health Law Professor John V. Jacobi Honored for Lifetime Achievement

Seton Hall Law School kicked off the 2018-19 school year by conferring the Miriam T. Rooney Medal on John V. Jacobi, Dorothea Dix Professor of Health Law & Policy and Faculty Director of the Center for Health & Pharmaceutical Law & Policy. Senior Associate Dean Charles Sullivan described the award as “a life-time achievement, all-around-athlete award that recognizes not just professional accomplishments but character.”  

Dean Sullivan’s encomium began by celebrating John as a trusted, candid, and loyal colleague, who is beloved by our students for his intellect, humor, and compassion. John also has produced more than thirty articles and white papers, on topics ranging from health care finance to disability law to police misconduct. He has been cited more than 300 times in law reviews, and his articles have been downloaded more than 1,000 times on SSRN. 

John’s policy engagement has a meaningful impact on health delivery in New Jersey and beyond. The Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition, for example, of which John is Chair, started Newark’s first health information exchange.  It also helped to establish the Healthy Greater Newark ACO, one of the first entities certified by the state to form a Medicaid accountable care organization as part of a three-year demonstration project.

Given the depth, breadth, and duration of John’s policy work, it comes as no surprise that NJ SPOTLIGHT described John as “the state’s foremost expert on the intersection of health law and policy.”  

Dean Sullivan also highlighted John’s service to the law school and its community, noting that he always says yes when asked to help out, and always brings a thoughtful voice and careful follow-through to all his efforts. John’s colleagues stood in unison to commend him for his resolute commitment to his craft and society. The Center is both proud and grateful to have John at its helm.
