Craig Carpenito, U.S. Attorney for District of N.J. and Dr. Mary Meehan, Interim President of Seton Hall University to be Honored at Seton Hall University School of Law Commencement

Newark, NJ – January 7, 2019 Craig Carpenito ’00 will deliver the keynote address to students receiving Juris Doctor degrees, Master of Science in Jurisprudence degrees, and Master of Laws degrees at the 65th commencement ceremony for Seton Hall University School of Law on Thursday, May 23 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. In recognition of their outstanding contributions, the law school will bestow an honorary Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa degree upon Mr. Carpenito and Mary Meehan, Ph.D. during the ceremony.

Craig Carpenito is the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, responsible for overseeing all federal criminal prosecutions and the litigation of all civil matters in New Jersey in which the federal government has an interest. Mr. Carpenito supervises a staff of approximately 130 attorneys and 110 support personnel in Newark, Camden, and Trenton.  

 

Prior to being sworn in as U.S. Attorney on Jan. 4, 2018, Mr. Carpenito was a partner at Alston & Bird LLP, where he was a co-chair of the firm’s Litigation and Trial Practice Group and its Government and Internal Investigations Team. He previously served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey from 2003 to 2008.

Between August 2000 and September 2005, Mr. Carpenito was Senior Counsel in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement, New York Regional Office. He received his B.A. from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark.

Dr. Mary Meehan was appointed interim president of Seton Hall University on March 23, 2017. She is a nationally respected higher education and healthcare leader, as well as a former Seton Hall administrator and University alumna. Meehan has spent more than 30 years in executive positions at higher education and healthcare institutions, including more than a decade as the first lay president of Alverno College, a leading Catholic women's college in Milwaukee, Wis.

Dr. Meehan earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. at Seton Hall, as well as an M.S. in Health Policy and Management from New York Medical College. At Seton Hall, she served as Vice President and Assistant to the President from 1996 to 2001 and as Executive Vice President for Administration from 2001 to 2004. Prior to working in higher education, she had an extensive professional healthcare background and was named a life fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Dr. Meehan also serves on numerous boards, some of the most significant of which are the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (Vice Chair) and NCAA Presidents Council. She has provided extensive service to the Catholic Church, including chairing the Meehan Commission, a national survey of Catholic dioceses' policies regarding allegations of clergy misconduct.

Dr. Meehan has been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Sacagawea Award from Professional Dimensions, the Thomas More Faithful Servant Award, the Ben Franklin Award, Woman of the Year from Seton Hall University and the Outstanding Professional of the Year by both the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association and the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association.
