Seton Hall Law Welcomes Professors Jennifer Oliva and Ilya Beylin

Newark, NJ – September 4, 2019 - Seton Hall University School of Law opens the 2019-2020 academic year by welcoming two new professors to build out its life sciences and business law curricula. Associate Professor Jennifer Oliva joins Seton Hall Law’s nationally ranked health and life sciences faculty, which was augmented in January by the addition of Jacob Elberg from the U.S. Attorneys Office. Both Oliva and Elberg are already active in the Law School’s global life sciences compliance program. Ilya Beylin brings to the faculty his expertise in the financial services industry, which continues to be a draw for many Seton Hall law and master’s degree students.

Professor Jennifer Oliva, a graduate of the United States Military Academy who served in Kuwait, is a Rhodes and Truman Scholar, whose primarily academic focuses are in Health and FDA law. A seasoned trial attorney, she will also be teaching evidence. Most recently, the Harry S Truman Scholarship Foundation honored Professor Oliva with the 2019 Ike Skelton Award for her commitment to public service. She is the 2019-2020 Chair-Elect of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Law and Mental Disability and has been selected as a 2019 Weit Life Science Law Scholar.

Professor Oliva worked in the appellate and health/FDA law practice groups at multiple national law firms and served as the General Counsel and Vice President of a regional behavioral health care company. Prior to joining the faculty at Seton Hall Law, she served as Associate Professor of Law and Public Health at West Virginia University and as a visiting research scholar at The Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School.

An honors graduate from Georgetown Law Center, Oliva was a Public Interest Law Scholar and Executive Notes & Comments Editor of The Georgetown Law Journal. Professor Oliva earned an M.B.A. at Balliol College, Oxford University. After law school, Oliva clerked for the Honorable Stephanie K. Seymour on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the Honorable Thomas L. Ambro on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She was subsequently appointed Deputy State Solicitor of the State of Delaware by then-Attorney General Beau Biden.

“Professor Oliva brings a wealth of experience to our students and scholarly community, and has already begun working with our veteran recruitment initiatives,” says Dean Kathleen M. Boozang. “Seton Hall Law is proud to welcome an attorney with Jenn’s track record into our legal community – she will have an immediate impact, which is precisely what the community should expect from its law schools.”

Professor Ilya Beylin is a legal expert with a decade of practice experience in both financial and business law. His scholarship combines legal analysis, data driven observation, attention to institutional dynamics, economic theory, and pragmatism.

Professor Beylin also brings to Seton Hall Law years of practice experience, having served as general counsel at the preeminent platform for startup financing, AngelList, as well as its crowdfunding offshoot, Republic. Prior to going in-house, Beylin practiced corporate law with leading New York law firms. Beylin transitioned from practice to academia by teaching in the Lawyering Program at New York University School of Law.

Professor Beylin holds a J.D., Order of the Coif, from the University of Chicago Law School, and a B.A.S. in Computer Science and American Studies from Stanford University. Following law school, Beylin clerked for the Honorable Stephen F. Williams on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

“Seton Hall Law has been focused on hiring professors with expertise in the intersection of technology and their primary subject area. Professor Beylin epitomizes the interdisciplinary nature required of tomorrow’s graduates, and I know he will enrich the academic offerings of the Law School,” says Boozang. “The bench and bar appreciate Seton Hall Law graduates because they are smart, well-educated, and practice-ready. Both Jenn and Ilya bring the deep practice experience and cutting-edge scholarship that will continue our legacy of producing outstanding Seton Hall Lawyers.”
