  1. Explain the basic elements of enforceable contracts

  2. Recognize the circumstances in which courts will refuse to honor particular agreements

  3. Explain the basic principles underlying the law of negligence

The Introduction to Contracts and Torts course introduces MLS students to the law of contracts and to basic principles underlying the law of negligence. Students study contract formation, the nature and limits of contractual agreements, defenses to contract enforcement, and remedies for breach of contract, including how to estimate the amount of damages likely to be awarded in breach of contract cases. Course material also covers the basic principles underlying the law of negligence, the roles of judges, juries, and legislatures in creating and enforcing standards of care, the factors courts consider in determining the causes of a particular outcome, and the elements of selected business torts.

*Course is only open to students with a financial services concentration.
