Newark

The changes in Newark over the past few years are so vast that it’s been called the Renaissance City.  Quality of life, what Newark calls Qlife, is a top priority for the city and this renaissance makes life for students who live there a rich and vibrant experience.

Lifestyle
Although there are a number of neighborhoods in Newark, two of the most popular for law school students are downtown and the Ironbound section.  Each one offers unique opportunities for you to enjoy urban life here.

  1. Downtown – You can find all the amenities of downtown living in this part of Newark.  Many activities and services are within walking distance, which makes living here different from every other part of the law school community.
  2. Ironbound – This part of Newark got its name because it’s bounded by the same railroad tracks that have been there since the days when trains were king.  This immigrant neighborhood is diverse, but is known for its strong Portuguese community.

Accommodations
Living downtown has many options but the law school has relationships with the Clinton Street lofts which are about a five-minute walk from the law school and the luxury apartment building Eleven80, which is just two blocks from the law school.

The Clinton Street Lofts in the Union Building are large units which have modern amenities like designer kitchens, generous closet space, and high-speed internet access.  The building also has its own fitness room and laundry facilities.

Eleven80 is a high-rise with luxury units ranging from studios to two-bedroom apartments, all of which include premium amenities: a private lounge, and a multi-media entertainment room, a state-of-the-art health club and an on-premises bowling alley and basketball court.

Commute
Living in Newark affords you the easiest commute in the Seton Hall Law School community.  Most places downtown are within walking distance and the Ironbound section is also close as well.

If you need to get around Newark, transportation here is fairly simple.  New Jersey Transit runs two light rail lines through Newark.  One begins at Grove Street in Bloomfield and goes to Penn Station in Newark and the other runs between the Broad Street NJ Transit Station and Penn Station.  Newark is also served by a historic subway service that still runs trolley-style train cars.

Activities
With the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Prudential Center right downtown, you don’t have to go far for great performances in music or theater, or to catch the Devils play the best of the NHL on ice.  If you like baseball, the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League play at Riverfront Stadium right by the Broad Street station.

The Newark Museum, itself a historic landmark, has a first-class art collection, a planetarium, science galleries, and a sculpture garden.  The city also has a number of private galleries.

Services
With Rutgers-Newark, NJIT, Essex County College, and UMDNJ also located in Newark, you have the resources of an entire university district at your disposal.  And if you need to do research outside the law library, Newark has the state’s largest public library.
