Meet Esther Larios, a dedicated 3L at Seton Hall Law and this month's LEO Corner spotlight. Esther shares her inspiring journey from overcoming imposter syndrome to excelling in corporate law internships through the LatinoJustice CLASP program. With a passion for advocacy and a drive to support her community, she’s poised for success at Dechert LLP.
Why did you decide to attend law school?
I majored in public policy in college, and the intersection between law and policy
was a theme that often came up and interested me. In addition, as a Latina from an
immigrant household, I am well aware of the importance of advocating for those who
may not have a voice or otherwise go unheard. My legal education will give me the
necessary tools to support and advocate for my community.
How has your experience been in law school?
My experience in law school has been both challenging and rewarding. It has helped
me develop important skills necessary to succeed as a lawyer and to become more confident
in my own capabilities. I love a good challenge, and I know it's an investment in
myself that'll be well worth it.
How has being in the LEO program impacted your law school experience?
The LEO program has had such a positive impact on my law school experience. The program
has offered mentorship opportunities, academic support, and networking events that
have been instrumental in my success. It has also connected me with a diverse group
of students with whom I can relate to, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual
support.
What have you enjoyed the most in law school and why?
I have really enjoyed being a part of LALSA. The organization creates a sense of community
for Latinx students on campus, which was particularly comforting when I came in as
a 1L. LALSA has been a massive part of my experience at Seton Hall.
Tell us about your experience interning with Dechert this summer and 400 Capital Management
last summer.
Interning with Dechert this summer was a great experience. I was able to work on important
deals and pro bono matters while learning from very experienced lawyers who were eager
to teach. My internship with 400 Capital Management last summer gave me a sense of
what it's like to work in-house at an investment firm. Because I don't have a finance
background, this experience introduced me to new concepts and gave me a better understanding
of financial regulations and compliance, which came in handy this year.
How did you get these internships?
I got these internships by applying to the LatinoJustice Corporate Law Firm Alliance
Summer Program, a two-year program in which participants work two consecutive summers,
the first at a corporate legal department and the following year at a firm.
What was the process like for LatinoJustice CLASP?
The process for LatinoJustice CLASP involved submitting a detailed application and
participating in multiple rounds of interviews with members of the LatinoJustice board,
individual companies, and law firms.
What are the benefits of this program?
LatinoJustice's CLASP program offers numerous benefits, but one of the most significant
is its mentorship program. CLASP participants are connected with experienced lawyers
who serve as mentors and offer support at every step of the program, starting from
the interview process.
What challenges have you faced in law school, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I faced in law school was imposter syndrome. During
my 1L year, especially, I often felt out of place or like I wasn't smart enough. While
I have not fully overcome this, the support I have received from mentors and peers
has been incredibly helpful. I have also learned to focus on my goals, cancel out
the noise, and credit myself for all my hard work.
Do you have mentors, and how have they played a role in your law school career?
I have been fortunate to have several mentors who have played a crucial role in my
law school career. They have encouraged and guided me on academic and career decisions
and supported me during challenging times. My mentors have played an essential role
in my law school experience, and they will continue to play an active role in my legal
career once I graduate.
What are your plans for post-graduation? What practice area(s) are you interested
in?
After graduation, I will be returning to Dechert as an associate. I plan on pursuing
a career in corporate law, focusing on private equity and fund formation.
What advice would you give students on how to be successful in law school?
To be successful in law school, I advise students to develop strong time management
skills, seek out and utilize academic and career resources, and build a supportive
network of peers and mentors. Maintaining a balance between academics and taking care
of yourself is just as important. Reading, outlining, and studying should obviously
be a priority, but taking a day off and doing something you enjoy is okay.
