Tell us about your 1L summer internship experience with Verizon? What type of assignments did you receive? What department(s) did you work in?
During my 1L summer internship with Verizon, I had the opportunity to work in Verizon’s Legal Department and gain experience in in-house legal practice for a company. I worked on a variety of projects in different practice areas, including contracts, compliance, marketing, labor and employment, environmental sustainability, tax, and pro bono. Through these assignments, I was able to narrow down my interests in the law and clarify which areas I want to pursue in my legal career.
What was the interview process like with Verizon?
I enjoyed the interview process with Verizon. After applying online, I had a phone interview with a recruiter who explained the logistics and answered my questions about the internship. The recruiter then scheduled two 30-minute virtual interviews with two of Verizon’s General Counsels.
What advice would you give to another law student looking for a corporate summer internship?
My advice to anyone seeking a corporate summer internship would be to start your search early. Research where other law students have interned to see which companies offer legal internship programs. I recommend preparing for interviews with Seton Hall’s Office of Career Services and researching typical interview questions online. During the interview, demonstrate your enthusiasm for working in-house in the future and your eagerness to explore different areas of law.
You are originally from California, what made you decide to attend law school in New Jersey?
I decided to attend law school in New Jersey because I want to practice law either in New Jersey or elsewhere on the East Coast, due to its proximity to New York City, and because I have family and friends in the area.
How has your law school experience been so far?
My law school experience has been very rewarding. The coursework is challenging but fascinating, and I’ve enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of the law. Beyond academics, I’ve made some great friends this year, both inside and outside of law school. It makes all the difference to have supportive people around you during such an academically rigorous year. In addition, my summer internship has been a fantastic experience that reaffirmed my legal career aspirations.
What are you looking forward to the most as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Legislation and Public Policy?
As an Associate Editor, I’m looking forward to solidifying my topic for my comment and gaining greater insight into a specific legal and legislative question while also collaborating with peers and faculty members. I’m also excited about improving my writing skills, which will enhance my ability to communicate policy and legislation.
What has benefited you the most from the Office of Career Services?
The Office of Career Services has been extremely beneficial to me for multiple reasons. Most notably, they informed me about my 1L summer internship and forwarded me the application. Additionally, they provided valuable feedback during my practice interview, which helped me perform better in the real interview. Lastly, they have been a great resource for examples and guidance on how to complete required application materials.
What are your post-graduation goals?
I’m currently considering various post-graduation paths that will help me achieve my long-term goals. My current plan is to potentially do a clerkship after graduation. Following that, I want to work at a firm that specializes in labor and employment law. Ultimately, I want to transition to an in-house legal position in the future. My current internship helped solidify my aspiration to eventually work in-house.
