Conflict Management Clinics

Conflict Management Clinics

Practical Experience Through Public Service

Seton Hall Law offers several conflict management clinical programs, during which students gain hands-on learning experience in the context of federal court litigation and investor advocacy. The clinics are run by Professor David White, and focus on providing no-cost legal assistance to vulnerable populations to help students hone their practical skills like negotiation, mediation, and advocacy while also instilling a commitment to public service and social justice.

SDNY Representative in Mediation Practicum

Through an innovative partnership with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), students will represent federal litigants in court-annexed mediation.

Under faculty supervision, students will participate in all material aspects of the attorney-client relationship—including the intake meeting, assessing client interests, negotiating with opposing counsel, drafting a pre-mediation statement and advocating for the client in a mediation.

This clinic is divided into two components: the study of mediation and the practicum phase. Enrollment is restricted to 3L and 4L students. Learn More

D.NJ Representation in Settlement Conference Practicum

Building upon foundational skills acquired through the SDNY Representation in Mediation Practicum, student advocates will represent federal litigants before the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (D.NJ) for the limited purpose of settlement conference in civil actions.

Advocates will hone interviewing and legal writing skills, negotiate complex matters, refine their approach to client counseling, and explore the practical contours of professional responsibility.

Enrollment is restricted to 3L and 4L students who earn an invitation through a competitive application and interview process facilitated by Professor David M. White, Director of the Conflict Management Program. Learn More
