Joel Silver, JD, '13 Receives the Dorothy M. Wolfe Award

Joel Silver is a Senior Associate General Counsel at Gilead Sciences, Inc. in Foster City, CA where he is responsible for managing global legal support for regulatory. Joel also serves as the Chair of Gilead’s Pro Bono program, which is focused on helping survivors of domestic violence obtain protective orders as well as providing vital legal services for juvenile immigration cases. Prior to joining Gilead, Joel worked as a Patent Agent in the human and animal health divisions at Pfizer Inc. Joel also worked as a Medicinal Chemist at Chiron Corp. Joel earned his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law and is admitted to the California Bar, Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. “Joel Silver has been one of the biggest supporters of Legal Aid SMC’s Domestic Violence Collaborative pro bono project over the past eight years. He has also been honored by the State Bar of California for his pro bono work and has received the Wiley Manuel Award every year since he became involved. Joel handled 19 domestic violence cases with us all while working as in-house counsel without the backing of a large pro bono support system. He has stepped in on cases that have become difficult, mentored other attorneys, and done amazing work. About The Dorothy M. Wolfe Award

This award is in memory of one of the first women attorneys in San Mateo County, noted for her deep belief in equal access to justice. Dorothy Wolfe was an ardent supporter of the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County throughout her career.
