Policy on Religious Accommodations

Seton Hall University (the “University”) welcomes individuals from all faith traditions.  The University will make good faith efforts to reasonably accommodate the observance of religious holidays and practices by students, unless such an accommodation would create an undue hardship, in that they alter or waive academic standards, implicate academic integrity concerns, are disruptive to, or interfere with, the academic environment of the classroom, or otherwise fundamentally alter the academic program.

Religious accommodations may include exam postponements or alternate exam scheduling, assistance with course scheduling and assignments, and recording of class for absences related to religious observance.  Whenever possible, such requests should be submitted no less than 30 days in advance of the requested accommodation by completing the information in the form below.

Religious accommodation requests are to be submitted to the Assistant Dean for Equity, Justice, and Engagement.  The Assistant Dean will gather any necessary information in order to consider a request, which may include consultation with the applicable faculty member(s), appropriate administrators and/or seeking additional information and/or documentation about the religious or spiritual practice(s) or belief(s) forming the basis for the request.

The University will consider reasonable religious accommodation requests on a case-by-case basis and consider factors, including but not limited to the:

The University may suggest an alternative accommodation it deems reasonable to accommodate a request. If there is more than one option, the University will balance the expressed preference with academic considerations.

The University will communicate the decision on the request for an accommodation to the student and applicable faculty member.  Religious accommodations remain in effect through the date included on the approval letter unless the University notifies the student of a change.

If an appeal is needed, the issue may be raised to the Dean of the Law School or their designee within five (5) days of receipt of the decision by the Assistant Dean. The decision of the Dean or the Dean’s designee is final.

Students seeking a religious accommodation must submit the Religious Accommodation Form by the stated deadline.
