Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility Requirements: European Court of Justice

Applications are due to Professor Tracy Kaye.  Please email Professor Tracy Kaye at [email protected] or her legal support specialist, Matilda McDougall at [email protected] for the application. More details available below.

The purpose of the Dean Acheson Legal Scholar Program is to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and the European Union in the context of the legal profession. It is therefore open to American citizens and legal permanent residents only. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed three years of law school and who have a strong knowledge of European Union Law. As noted above, some knowledge of French is required, varying with the type of scholar. Knowledge of an EU language other than French and English is an advantage, and generally necessary for a scholar with an Advocate General.

As an externship for academic credit, the program is only available to third-year students who have a minimum GPA of 3.30, have completed the course in European Union Business Law and possess proficiency in French.

Students who are planning on applying to this program should complete the European Union Business Law course by their second or third-year of law school.

Note that European Union Business Law is a prerequisite to participation in the Dean Acheson Externship at the Court of Justice and the General Court (specializing in antitrust/competition law) in Luxembourg. The Dean Acheson Legal Scholar Program, sponsored by the Court of Justice of the European Union and the American Embassy in Luxembourg, promotes the understanding of European Union Law among American lawyers. The Legal Scholar Program is an extraordinary opportunity for third year law students and recent graduates to engage in substantive research and work with a Judge or Advocate General of the Court of Justice or a Judge of the General Court.

Selection Process

Students are nominated by the Dean on April 1st of each year for either the following fall or spring semester. Only three nominees per participating school are allowed.
