Honoring Mariellen Dugan '91
“Being a lawyer puts you in an unparalleled position of trust,” Dugan said to a group of first-year students at Professor Franzese’s bi-annual “Loving the Law” celebration on February 15
Seton Hall Law’s student organization, the Women’s Law Forum, honors Mariellen Dugan ’91, Senior Vice President & General Counsel of New Jersey Resources Corporation, with their prestigious Woman of Substance Award on February 24 at 6 p.m.
New Jersey Resources Corporation (NJR) is a Fortune 1000 energy services holding company providing retail and wholesale energy services to customers in New Jersey and in states from the Gulf Coast to New England and Canada.
On February 15, Dugan spoke to Professor Paul Franzese’s Property class during the bi-annual “Loving the Law” celebration. She reminded students of the value of their career path: “Mostly what I love about being a lawyer is that I can help people when they are at their most vulnerable,” she said. “It might seem mundane to handle a real estate closing, but when people buy a home, they are usually putting their life savings in your hands. At NJR it’s my responsibility to help ensure we continue to operate, because we employ thousands of people. That’s an enormous responsibility. So, look at your legal career as the opportunity of a lifetime.”
Dugan joined NJR in 2005. Among her many accomplishments to date, she has reduced outside counsel fees by more than 30 percent; developed a company-wide corporate compliance program; she has overseen the formation of an interstate joint venture with one of North America’s leading midstream natural gas companies, and she has provided advice and counsel to maximize clean energy initiatives via multiple NJR subsidiaries.
In 1994, Dugan became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, where she was assigned to the Criminal Division, the Fraud and Public Protection Division and the Special Prosecutions Division. After the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Dugan was Of Counsel to Marino & Associates, a boutique white-collar criminal defense and complex civil litigation firm. She worked for Marino & Associates for four years before leaving to serve as First Assistant Attorney General for the State of New Jersey, supervising the Department of Law and Public Safety and serving as Acting Attorney General when the Attorney General was not available.
Dugan has been a member of the Seton Hall Law Board of Visitors, and also, an adjunct professor of law. During her law school career, she was a member of the Seton Hall Legislative Bureau. Following graduation from law school, she served as clerk to the Honorable Dickinson R. Debevoise, U.S. District Judge for the District of New Jersey. Following her clerkship, Ms. Dugan joined Crummy, Del Deo, Dolan, Griffinger and Vecchione – now Gibbons P.C. – where she was an associate for two years.
