Seton Hall School of Law offers students opportunities to develop advocacy skills through intraschool and interscholastic competitions. All J.D. students are invited to participate, with the exception of the John J. Gibbons Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition, which is open only to students from other law schools.
GENERAL RULES FOR COMPETITIONS:
First-year law students may not compete in interscholastic competitions. Students may participate in only one interscholastic competition per semester. Students participating in a spring interscholastic competition generally may not also participate in the Gressman Competition unless they receive a waiver from the Associate Dean for Experiential Education. To support continued learning and development, students may not be members of both the Interscholastic Moot Court Board and the Mock Trial Team.
Competitions are sponsored by law schools, bar associations, including the American Bar Association, and specialty bar organizations. Faculty and advocacy program directors select competitions that align with the law school’s academic mission. The law school establishes selection processes to promote equitable access and requires prerequisites to ensure students are academically prepared. Because resources for coaching, advising and travel are limited, Seton Hall Law selects competitions that provide the strongest educational opportunities and does not participate in every nationally sponsored competition. The law school does not maintain an interscholastic dispute resolution team. Students interested in alternative dispute resolution and mediation should contact Professor David White about simulation and live-client course offerings through the Conflict Management Program.

INTERSCHOLASTIC COMPETITIONS:
Seton Hall Law sponsors student teams for interscholastic competitions in appellate advocacy, mock trial, health law regulation and compliance, tax counseling and international moot court. These competitions provide students with practical advocacy experience and opportunities to develop professional skills.
The law school maintains policies governing interscholastic competitions to ensure students are prepared and participation aligns with their academic experience. Students compete as members of teams selected through a fair and equitable process and represent Seton Hall Law. Participants must comply with all law school policies.
