Honoring Judge John J. Gibbons
The Gibbons Competition honors Judge John J. Gibbons, a Newark native whose distinguished career as a lawyer, judge and law professor was deeply rooted in the city and Seton Hall Law. A founding member of the Law School faculty in the 1950s, he taught constitutional law and federal courts to generations of students while practicing law and later serving as a U.S. circuit judge. His commitment to public service included helping provide legal representation to Newark residents during the 1967 riots and establishing a public interest and constitutional law fellowship that continues his legacy of pro bono service.
