Alexa Firth (2L) spent her summer interning with The Honorable Jose R. Almonte, U.S. Magistrate Judge, where she gained firsthand experience in federal judicial proceedings. As a Research Assistant for Seton Hall Law’s Legal Education Opportunity (LEO) Program, Alexa continues to give back to the community that inspired her legal journey.

What’s one defining experience from your early life or education that influenced your decision to pursue law?
A defining experience from my early life that influenced my decision to pursue law was when my family went through a difficult situation where we needed a lawyer. Watching how the attorney impacted my family and our situation really spoke to me. I saw firsthand the impact a lawyer can have on people’s lives when they’re at their most vulnerable. That experience inspired me to pursue a career in law so that I could one day impact others the same way that attorney impacted my family.
What inspired you to attend Seton Hall Law School?
I was inspired to attend Seton Hall Law because when I first visited the school, I immediately felt a sense of community and support. Growing up in New Jersey, I knew that I wanted to build my career in either NJ or New York City. Seton Hall’s strong alumni presence in both areas aligned perfectly with this goal. Most importantly, after experiencing the culture at Seton Hall, I was confident that I was where I belonged.
What has been the most rewarding part of your LEO experience so far?
The most rewarding part of my LEO experience has been getting to know all the incredible students and alumni in the program. They are inspiring, hardworking individuals who are always willing to help you with whatever you need and answer any questions you have!
Can you tell us a bit about your work this summer with Judge Almonte?
Working this summer with Judge Almonte has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had in law school so far! The knowledge I gained from both Judge Almonte and his chambers has been invaluable. I was able to work on real writing assignments for real cases and attend court proceedings for both Judge Almonte and other District Court Judges. Judge Almonte also arranged several lunches where we got to speak with professionals across various practice areas. It was fascinating to see the behind-the-scenes work of judicial chambers and to get feedback on my work from experienced legal professionals. I am so grateful for the advice and lessons I received from Judge Almonte and his team!
How did your role as a Research Assistant for the LEO Program impact you?
Serving as a Research Assistant for the LEO Program has been an incredibly meaningful experience because it allows me to give back to a program that has already given so much to me. The LEO community provided invaluable support and guidance throughout my first year of law school, so I am grateful to have the opportunity to help other students benefit from the same resources and mentorship. It feels rewarding to contribute to a program that is so impactful, and I am proud to serve as a Research Assistant!
What has been your most memorable moment at Seton Hall Law so far?
My most memorable moment at Seton Hall Law has been participating in the Riccio Competition during the second semester of my 1L year. It was such a fun and rewarding experience that introduced me to so many amazing people! It also sparked my interest in litigation. I am looking forward to competing in another moot court competition this upcoming year!
Which law school course or professor has had the biggest impact on you?
Professor Perez-Vellios, my Introduction to Lawyering professor and the Director of the LEO Program, has had the biggest impact on me. She is an incredible professor, mentor, and person. She has not only helped me discover my passion for writing but has also helped me improve my legal research, writing, and professional skills. Her strength and wisdom have truly inspired me to keep working hard each and every day. Thanks to her, I am constantly reminded that I can achieve anything through hard work and dedication!
Outside of law school, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
I enjoy spending time with friends and family, exercising, doing hot yoga, and traveling!
What advice would you give to incoming LEO Fellows or first-year law students?
My biggest advice is to find what habits work best for you and to not be afraid to ask for help. Law school can feel overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Take advantage of the support systems around you—your classmates, professors, and the LEO Program. Also, give yourself grace as you adjust. It’s a learning process for everyone. If you stay organized, keep working hard, and block out the noise around you, you’ll find your rhythm and thrive.
Looking ahead, what are your career goals and aspirations after graduation?
I haven’t yet decided on my long-term career goals, but I do see myself pursuing a career in litigation!
